Librarian at a small prek3 -12th grade rural school in Kansas. Worried about books being removed 😣

What I would really like to see anywhere tackle is “free aftercare for preK3 and preK4”

DC has public prek3!!! and an insane charter system :/

You underestimate 7th graders. He's more like PreK3.

I worked really hard to get my kid into gifted and talented. One it’s free, it’s just an accelerated magnet public school. But I wanted her in a program that will challenge her. I’ve been working closely with her teachers since prek3!

Great time visiting classrooms in the WISSIT network. Thanks Jere Lorenzen-Strait, PreK3 at School Within School for letting me visit your playful learning space

"but why are we talking about middle schools when the kid is in PreK3?"

I don't know why this drifted through my head right now, but when the now-5th grader was in PreK3 they had a song about the liturgical year where one of the lyrics was "green is for the growing times" but my little one misheard it so continued to sing "green is for the boring times" for a long time.

I went to Montessori for PreK3 thru Kindergarten. I have no recollection of even holding a pencil until first grade. I did learn how to read, feed mice to a snake, sew a button, wash dishes, polish wood trinkets, dial telephones, lots of teamwork, and how to get a wood chip out of my own knee
On the upside, he is getting a ton of handwriting practice and his penmanship is much better than mine was at same age.

public prek3 yes. charter system is kinda fucked. normally placement is via lottery (we missed that process this time) and it saps funding from regular schools.

Omg. It feels like my 4 yr old is never going back to school. He faked sick Fri. Mon. was a holiday. Today is a half day so, no PreK3. Tomorrow’s e-learning.
I’d prob check myself in for a “grippy sock/no shoestrings” vacay if I could have access to my audiobooks & earbuds.

I’m struggling.

A única coisa que realmente presta é o sistema de educação pública.
Minha filha está no prek3 e estou maravilhada com a estrutura.
Estuda em período integral e estou chocada com toda a estrutura.
Isso sim essa Sra deveria copiar.

I will my Bear won an actual award on Prek3 Awards Day. Math and Science Award. We are so proud 👏

I don't even know how this would work mid-year for schools. And even without this DC is floating huge budget cuts next year including not being able to fully fund universal free prek3.

Hi Warren. I teach general music, PreK3 through 8th grade, as well as directing the school choir. Oh, and I’m also the art teacher :)

Compared notes w/ FLBFF whose kids are at private school, & it’s the same shit, even tho one of hers is in PreK3 (despite the fact that he can legit read and he’s super old for the grade). We’re so over this nonsense. Bring back boomer parent expectations: “kid is at school and clothed. Thx.”

Saaaame. When I was in PreK3, mean girl Rebecca figured out I didn’t like the song and would “Pa RUM pa pa PUUUUUMMMM” me whenever she could, causing me to hold my ears and yell STOP, usually in the middle of story or nap time, and I’d get in trouble.
Still big mad lol

I have so many thoughts and feelings about this (and on these tools)! PreK3 teacher used Class Dojo last year, and we were getting constant ads for paid tutoring (for a 3 year old!!!) Our school is using Remind this year, which I thought was DCPS-wide, but maybe not.

You’d have to pry DC’s Free PreK3 out of rich Ward 3’s cold dead hands.

Don’t Trust Fish: Facts and Opinions and Zine Creation in the School Library
As a school librarian who teaches 23 classes each week from PreK3 through 5th grade, finding the perfect read aloud book that can be used for every single class is something to celebrate. When I came across Don’t Trust Fish by Neil Sharperson and Dan Santat in the “new releases” on Sora, I clicked through it, and was immediately drawn in. Even as fun and engaging as I, a librarian, found it, I could not have imagined how much each and every one of my classes would enjoy the book. I was able to come up with two distinct projects for my classes using this one book, and each one kept my students engaged with the AASL standards and laughing.  Don’t Trust Fish is a picture book that is full of facts, which provides so much fodder for book discussion! The book begins with some simple facts and animal illustrations–cows,... The post Don’t Trust Fish: Facts and Opinions and Zine Creation in the School Library appeared first on ALSC Blog.
