This is probably related to the huge amount of unnecessary work that must be done on-site to build escalators in North America, per the union contract. The balustrade is a particularly sore spot for the manufacturers, I’ve been told. Pgs. 73-74: admin.centerforbuilding.org/wp-content/u...

New article in @angewandtechemie.bsky.social!

A thorough look at an isolated acridinyl radical and its conPET-type photoreactivity, with an emphasis on understanding how SET takes place.

Counterintuitive Photochemistry of an Isolated Acridinyl Radical: ConPET via Preassembly, Solvated Electrons, or a Long‐Lived Excited State?

preassembly is completed! also first time working with milliput- because as much as i love the insane detail resolution of the printer, warping is definitely a thing.

It probably helps reliability that escalator manufacturers in Japan haven’t signed agreements with their union that requires them to take escalators assembled in precise factory conditions apart and reassemble them on-site admin.centerforbuilding.org/wp-content/u...

Maybe the most inefficient aspect of the industry – the IUEC leader once bragged to his members, “look around and ask why, when no other trade is fighting over pre-fab, they have to allow our members to…take a complete escalator apart on the job.” admin.centerforbuilding.org/wp-content/u... New preprint on ChemRxiv!
Our latest exploration of conPET/e-PRC #photoredox highlights preassembly and "anti-Kasha" reactivity, even in a system with a long ES lifetime.
Thanks to all involved, including collaborators at HUN-REN and Uni of Warwick.

tbf, the minis i noticed are really not on the same level with detail and sharpness, but they will still be fun to paint. The preassembly was...messy though. Cleanup time

See pg. 73 of my full elevator report, where I briefly discuss elevator installation innovation abroad using robots and modular construction, and then get into the very backwards way that contracts here forbid way more basic forms of preassembly and prefabrication

This leads the Big Four to dominate the US/Canadian market without major competition, which lets them avoid the difficult but necessary task of renegotiating the anti-preassembly/prefab contract with the IUEC. So elevators in NA take 2x as long to build & modernize (1 floor/week here, 2 in Europe )

The unions also have plenty of their own tyranny (e.g. the elevator union's absurd ban on preassembly, and the NYC transit union's desire to ban one-person train operation despite that being very common around the world.)

I was a cook and teacher at a private school. I made lunch for private school pre.-K.-1st grade. Later I oversaw a YMCA free breakfast program for public schools grades K-4. The breakfast program was A LOT stickier. The more preassembly the better. so much time is spent on cutting things in half.
I'll be there one of the days!
#APS2025 attendees: We have partnered with the United Way of Central Maryland to provide over 400 breakfasts for school-aged children in need. Help us assemble meal kits 12–1 p.m. in the APS Homebase (in the PhysioHub) Friday and Saturday. #WeArePhysiology🧪

Unions are probably also going to be a huge source of opposition (especially when they're the same unions who successfully banned preassembly).
