Yup, my insurance denied a preauth for a particular GI test for my son. Turned out the doctor who signed off on the denial was a plastic surgeon. Called them on it - preauth granted.

ohhh, beepo's miseries.... i messed up a combo of not checking voicemail and calling back fast enough and now im in preauth+scrip renewal hell+subsequent symptom flare 😔 hopefully i'll have an early window in my meetings tmrw that i can use to call my dr's office.................

Have the doctor suggest to patients that they ask the pharmacy to run what their copay would be if it were written as "brand name only" and whether it needs a preauth. Some plans need the preauth, some don't.

They JUST put the preauth in on Monday btw, 5 business days before the surgery was scheduled 🙃

had a really bad day today. mri i’m supposed to have tomorrow on my back got the preauth denied by insurance. my doctor is gonna work on them we have a few routes to try but every day i sleep less and spend more time in pain so … idk. discouraged. not able to do much these days beyond my day job

There are three broad factors as to why preauth is a thing
1. the procedures are expensive
2. they want to divert you to another, cheaper treatment if they can
3. some doctors are quacks. This will come up again when we get to denials.
Doctors get really mad about pre auth, but see point 3.

I stayed in the hospital a total of 4 days last week on an antibiotics IV. I received a preauth denial from my insurance. While this appears to be in error and will likely be corrected, I did get to see the total cost of my stay without anything written off.

...they only cover 50% of. They did get preauth for this thankfully, but there's still the coinsurance. Depending on how things go it could end at 4 weeks or go as long as ten weeks.
As for how I'm feeling. Like absolute shit, but that's to be expected after this adventure.
