and even then i still had to back-hack the math on the precon setups they were handing out bc they're Just Weird Enough that it becomes hard to actually settle what the hell my build is. the shadow amps seem like a good idea until they say "okay chucklehead you write them now".

Our friend is coming over for some Horde MtG today. Think I'll try these decks. Blue is a foundations precon. Others are two I built.

Yep. As someone who plays EDH at different venues 2-3 times a week and goes to a few major events a year, I meet all sorts of players for whom TMNT, Marvel, etc. was their first set or where their first precon came from.
You can feel how you want about UB, but it is working on a fundamental level.

Met a couple players at prerelease who got into Magic because of The Hobbit and had been playing a bunch on Arena. Reality Fracture was their first prerelease.

The Jace precon seems like a pretty good place for it, no? Like it lets you set up your polymorph if nothing else.

I'm not sure it's overplayed. I've seen one guide saying cut it from the Jace Precon.
Another prominent creator claiming that "we dont play cantrips as they don't put you up a card"
But I do agree. Context is important. Goes without saying. Without shuffle effects, most other cantrips are better.
