How and when C3 does a predraw is also strange to me yeah. Sometimes changing the object color also triggers a form of predraw because it messes with UV on webgpu but doesn't usually clip objects.

that's cool. back when our group met around a table, I had to predraw certain maps and then hide them with books etec to sort of obscure them ahead of time so prep wasnt as obnoxious. (though I also used tricks like invisible ink pens and blue light for secret doors).

I've seen some people say that to prewrite/predraw for the October challenges is cheating...
That is nowhere in my ruleset, I'm using October as more of a showcase than some crunch period, I have enough of those at work, this is just for us to have a good time and share some nastiness

The game uses a 1bpp "clean" framebuffer with only the level terrain for pixel perfect ground/wall collisions. That I can predraw and store in rom. 6k per room, though. And uncompressed. I'll need six 16k banks for just the game's 12 rooms/screens.
