As some relief from the PREFU and general electioneering, here's some embroidery I found in the Salvation Army today. Cherries, and dandelions, and little rabbits, and a bit of ANXIETY.

PREFUs are only useful for economists & the media reinforcing a narrative.

Labour's last PREFU 'things looking up' - National attacked it.

#nzpol Today's update from Treasury shows ongoing pain for working people and declining public services if New Zealand stays on the same track:
PREFU shows jobs pain and service cuts locked in under Luxon NZCTU
Treasury’s Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update (PREFU) forecasts show ongoing pain for working people and declining public services if the fiscal approach doesn’t change. The election provides an ...

Yes! This makes me so wild. The PREFU is right there. We were fine and would have continued fine if National hadn't decided to tank the economy.

I do hope the incoming LabourGreens coalition spot this during PREFU and have something to say about it.
September 28, 2026 at 10:27 PM
#nzpol
PREFU results actually confirm the Greens’ understanding that higher tax revenues drive better economic outcomes. The major difference of course is where that tax revenue is sourced.

Hooboy am I looking forward to seeing the PREFU #NZPol

The WHOLE point of the Pre-Election Fiscal Update (PREFU) is there are no surprises for an incoming government. Willis is either bullshitting here or happy to cast aspersions on Treasury for fudging PREFU, a bold move. Honestly she really should be pulled up over this.

Remember that ratings agencies were quite comfortable with New Zealand's public debt levels before the 2023 election.

And Treasury's PREFU showed a better forecast track than this government have delivered.

& remind me again, didn't Labour leave a PREFU in pretty fine shape?
July 16, 2025 at 2:43 AM
Counterpoint: no, she doesn't. She's spent three years tanking the economy, the PREFU doesn't show it un-tanking any time soon. Where's the jobs? Where's the higher wages? What's going to bring people back from Australia? I'll wait.

Also Nats not announcing their financial policies for another week or two! All that shit they gave Labour because they wanted to wait for PrEFU, but they're not fucking ready themselves.
Hypocrites.
October 4, 2026 at 5:13 AM
#nzpol Just catching up with the HYEFU data today - but the data looks grim pretty much across the board. One data point stood out to me - the economy will be cumulatively $28.3bn smaller at the next election than predicted by Treasury at the last election.
December 16, 2025 at 1:23 AM
Saw Craig Renney pointing out that the PREFU forecasts are built on predictions about oil prices which were wrong before it was released yesterday so that's fun

FFS Nicola, NO! I’ve heard this too many times.

The economy wasn't "broken" until you got hold of it! It was doing fine before the last election, not great, but better than now.

Stop f'ing the economy, and WHERE TF ARE THE NEW FERRIES!?

National is devastated as PREFU is better than expected
National has reached new levels of excessive hyperbole in response to the PREFU release which was better than expected.
