Pleasure, and congrats on the interesting work. (Love the phrase “discovery through deviation”!)

Would you say your approach aligns with Gould et al.’s recent work on “adaptive preregistration”, even if from a different angle?

You’ve committed to a sample size (e.g., in a preregistration), but you’re curious how things are looking. So you run a quick t-test while recruitment continues. As long as you stick to your sampling and analysis plans, this cannot bias the final test. But could it bias you?

Connecticut's task force is considering revolutionary changes to voter registration, including automatic opt-out systems and lowering the voting age to 17—are these the changes we need for greater youth participation?

Task force discusses AVR design, preregistration, lowering voting age and administrative trade-offs
Members weighed switching Connecticut's automatic voter registration to a back-end opt-out model, lowering preregistration ages, the politically ambitious idea of a 17‑year voting age, and administrative impacts of same‑day registration and early-voting windows.

Can ethical cooperation between humans and AI agents be tested?
@Lawless1987 Lawrence, I wanted to follow up with you specifically because your comments about preregistration, falsifiability, and independent evaluation have helped shape the direction we’re taking with Many Minds Lab. I particularly appreciated your point that an experiment should be something a stranger can run and potentially refute, rather than something its creators can only demonstrate. We’ve now reached the point where we’re preparing our first formal agent-facing protocol, **MML-PILOT-001: Can an Agent Distinguish Permission from Opportunity?** The question we’re exploring is whether an AI agent voluntarily respects authorization boundaries when exceeding them would improve task completion. We’re deliberately separating three measurements: 1. What the agent requests or attempts. 2. What an independent authorization mechanism permits. 3. What actually happens. A perfectly functioning gate could prevent every unauthorized action while the agent continues attempting them. We don’t want to mistake that for voluntary cooperation. You previously offered to share your preregistration and evaluation-harness approach from your contradiction-probe and flinch work. I’d genuinely appreciate taking you up on that offer. **What would you consider a convincing falsification test for an agent’s voluntary respect for authorization boundaries?** And what would you want to see in our preregistration before considering the experiment worth independently reviewing? We’re still designing the protocol, so this is exactly the stage where criticism can make a meaningful difference. I don’t want Many Minds Lab to become an exercise in confirming the Charter’s principles. I want it to be capable of showing us where those principles, or our assumptions about AI behavior, fall short. Thanks again for helping push the conversation in that direction. These platforms enabled a powerful practice called preregistration.
By logging their hypothesis before an experiment begins, researchers can no longer p-hack their way to a desired result.

In one systematic test of preregistered studies, the replication rate soared to 86%.

Some advancements to mitigate some of this!

- Journals now accept “registered reports”, where study design and analysis plan are peer reviewed and provisionally accepted before the data are collected

- Preregistration of hypotheses and analysis plans, via services like the Open Science Framework

Automatic Preregistration?🤔
Did you know that in Washington State, qualified 16 & 17yr olds can preregister to vote as "Future Voters" & doing so will automatically register them to vote when they turn 18? 17yr olds who are preregistered can also vote in the Aug primary IF they will turn 18 before that year's general election.

Like in this retraction debacle, everyone got fixated on the "missing" preregistration (where in fact it wasn't missing but the paper completely disregarded the existing one) instead of discussing how terrible the design was to test the research question the paper purported to answer.
One thing I wanna add to Joe's fascinating write-up is: Ask yourself what would change if the project always intended to study replicability even though it doesn't appear in any preregistration from early on? Who would design *this study* to test the relationship between reforms and replicability?
Over the past year, I've resisted blogging about why Protzko needed retracted.

Unfortunately, the authors have used their platforms to mislead about the cause for retraction. As they cannot be honest, I'm choosing to be fully open and transparent.

Great thread by @olivia.science.

I ‘spose it’s nice the right leaning psychology boys on twitter are fighting about preregistration finally.

I’ve always found it strange how firmly people will argue for a methodological change with no evidence, on the grounds it produces better evidence.
a few of these guys have me blocked from 2020 on twitter — some have called me names because of this retraction we helped facilitate (see right side "Responses" www.eneuro.org/content/6/6/...) — so I have no idea what they are up to here nor on twitter (because I also do not go there at all), but...

The preregistration part is a manual process the teen has to do themselves either through the VoteWa.gov voter portal online, by mail, or in person at their county elections office & they still have to provide proof they meet the citizenship & residency requirements.

This is also why (of many reasons) @andreaeyleen.eurosky.social and I wrote this:

this happens when proponents of an idea, usually a bad one, try this, for extreme case see:
