Over 70 parents are petitioning to replace all board members at the Regina Early Learning Centre after its preschool program was canceled due to financial constraints. The program, which supports low-income and Indigenous families since 1977, has become a vital community resource. Founded by Anne Luke, who quit her teaching job to address gaps in early education for marginalized families, the center uses the Reggio Emilia approach, recognized provincially and nationally. Parents argue the abrupt closure without consultation disrupted essential services like subsidized meals and transportation. The $40 annual fee was replaced with a $10 daily daycare rate, making it unaffordable for most. Advocates like Courtney Kydd and Gary Robins stress the program’s unique role in fostering holistic development and community support. A petition signed by over 90% of members demands board removal and a special meeting to elect new leadership. The center cites a $300,000 deficit and lost donor funding as reasons for the cuts, but parents feel ignored despite their reliance on the program.
