O presidente dos Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, assinou na quinta-feira, 17, um instrumento liberando a pesca comercial no Monumento Nacional Marinho das Ilhas Remotas do Pacífico (PRIMNM, na sigla em inglês), onde até então era proibida.O próprio instrumento menciona que o PRIMNM "foi estabelecido para proteger e preservar as terras e o ambiente marinho ao redor das Ilhas Wake, Baker, Howland e Jarvis; os Atóis Johnston e Palmyra; o Recife Kingman; e os objetos históricos e científicos neles contidos", incluindo peixes, aves, mamíferos marinhos, corais e a biodiversidade geral dos ecossistemas locais."Como parte da gestão do PRIMNM, a pesca comercial está atualmente proibida dentro de seus limites", menciona a resolução assinada por Trump na quinta-feira, 17. "Considero que uma pesca comercial devidamente gerida não colocaria em risco os objetos de interesse científico e histórico que o PRIMNM protege", completou.No documento, o presidente norte-americano afirma que proibições à pesca comercial fizeram as frotas pesqueiras de seu país perderem acesso a quase metade da Zona Econômica Exclusiva dos Estados Unidos nas Ilhas do Pacífico."Isso levou os pescadores americanos a pescarem em águas internacionais mais distantes da costa para competirem com frotas estrangeiras pouco reguladas e altamente subsidiadas. Isso impõe desvantagens aos pescadores comerciais honestos dos Estados Unidos e prejudica territórios americanos como a Samoa Americana, cuja economia do setor privado depende em mais de 80% da indústria pesqueira", justificou Trump, na resolução.
