An Australian inmate is receiving consular support after being allegedly assaulted by a corrections officer at the Lautoka Remand Centre in Fiji. Security footage, dated June 14, 2026, shows the incident where the officer punches and drags the prisoner across the ground before throwing him to the floor. Asaeli Sorovaki, the accused corrections officer, was charged with assault and granted bail on a $1000 non-cash bond following his court appearance. Three senior Fijian Corrections Service officers have been suspended as an internal disciplinary tribunal investigates the incident. The inmate sustained minor injuries, and a reconciliation hearing is scheduled for September 7. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is assisting the Australian victim, while authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the attack.
