A pine processionary moth trap in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, Bretagne

The caterpillars travel nose to tail down the trunk to burrow into soil & pupate into moths late summer

The trap guides them into the bag with material replicating the ground. When captured the contents are burnt

Lydd on Sea VC15, another breezy night by the sea, although numbers did increase to 189 of 62sp.

There is no end to the horrors of Australian fauna. “Venomous processionary caterpillars” isn’t even the most terrifying triumvirate of words in this article.

The pine processionary caterpillar is a growing risk across Europe. They feed on pine trees and cause severe skin, eye and respiratory irritation in humans and can be fatal for dogs.

Climate change is helping them spread north, survive milder winters and damage forests.

Oak Processionary was new for the garden last night. This species is nominally Continental, but established in West London about 20y ago. It may well be spreading. Its larvae can defoliate oaks. Contact with their hairs can sometimes cause skin, eye, and lung irritation/damage

With an enormous full moon and cloudless sky last night felt a lot like being out in semi-daylight and not at all conducive to a big moth catch. That said, there were still a few notables trapped at the Obs overnight incl only our third ever Oak Processionary and another Eastern Bordered Straw.
