this is an awful story and the subtext, that "yes-and a conversation with somebody increasingly untethered from reality so they use the app endlessly" might be the only unambiguously successful productization of LLMs right as the big providers are getting desperate about revenue, is as bad or worse

The problem isn't the technology. It's the productization of AI, the friction-minimizing, rush-to-market philosophy all big tech companies have adopted, that's doing real psychological damage. It's been doing that already, but this is the worst one.

as I said years ago, the sort of final boss of autonomous vehicle productization is that they are going to be monotonically slower to their destinations than human-driven vehicles. sometimes that'll be fine, sometimes it won't, but getting around it would require impossible safety compromises

The gap between frontier model capabilities and the productization of those capabilities has been one of the most interesting things in AI to me over the last few years.
People at the labs see the potential, but every consumer product is building things (badly) that were possible three years ago.

Frankly atproto is a great technology that just has yet to really be successfully productized. A few orgs are putting real work into that productization now but only time will tell if it succeeds.

Arguably, it’s an inherent possible productization of the technology, but all deployments of it require explicit choices around training data, guardrails, etc.

It's a bit of culture shock to go from bluesky which has little monetization/productization to a platform that is very explicitly geared towards monetization. UTMs and analytics everywhere, and a big focus on subscriber counts.
