The Kingmere Marine Conservation Zone south of Littlehampton & Worthing is one of the most important Black Sea Bream spawning sites in the UK. All Black Sea Bream are born female. They're protogynous hermaphrodites, so they change to male when they reach 30cm.

"the Asian sheephead wrasse is sequentially hermaphroditic. Specifically, they are protogynous, meaning that individuals of this species are always born female and only change sex when they grow older [...] the sex change does not always happen, and reversion is impossible."

its so irritating as a nerd all this stuff is based off egregious misconceptions of mammalian social behaviors because this kind of premise is just a really lame version of leks, intentional gatherings of displaying and courting male animals while females pass by and check them out and pick out

The moon wrasse, Thalassoma lunare

Moon wrasses are protogynous hermaphrodites: all individuals start life as females & some later change sex to become males

Sex change can be rapid (a few days days) & is associated with social structure

here's a fish 🧪 Tiger grouper, Mycteroperca tigris. A mid-Atlantic grouper that grows to about 40" / 22 lbs. Reef-dwelling ambush predators that can change colour quickly to match their surroundings, they are thought to be protogynous hermaphrodites: starting life as females, & becoming male later 🏳️‍⚧️

That let us talk about gender.

My example: how many of you know about clownfish?

MANY hands go up, allowing me to pass the baton on this term.

It is absolutely wild and a few other plants do the same or similar things. Avocados are hermaphrodites with bisexual protogynous flowers. The dimorphism is in the timing of flower opening so some plants present pollen in the morning and receive it in the afternoon; the others vice versa.

Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) A vernal understory species. Protogynous flowers favor early pollinators; rupturing seed pods expose developing embryos. I read that as Grouper at first. But that kinda works too in a way too. Especially in reproduction where they are protogynous hermaphrodites.

Hageman has a rare protogynous mutation which facilitates gender switching under duress, explaining her misogynistic insults.

the slippery dick wrasse is a protogynous hermaphrodite species, which has three life stages - juvenile stage, initial stage (the fish becomes female) and terminal stage (the fish then becomes male). All i can say is, good for them.

7/ Now, when I say "flower", the proper word would be "inflorescence"; they contain a outer spathe, which is actually a modified leaf, and an inner spadix, which contains numerous flowers, sometimes male above and female below, and generally protogynous: female receptive before male.

Fun challenge: find elegant alternate terms for “female” & “bisexual” in a grant to study a plant whose florets are protogynous: they bear female parts (stigmas), then male parts (anthers); in between they bear both female & male florets. And the first dates of these phases r my dependent variables.
