Do note that they fixed their extant topology to the results of a study with controversial findings regarding Protura, and that the character matrix was quite small. I'm excited by the possibility, but will look forward to further testing of these hypotheses.

Although, in the phylogeny it is more closely related to Insecta proper than are Collembola, Diplura, and Protura...so idk if it's exactly insect-crustacean transition. It questions whether those groups terrestrialized separately

ok Auntie thankyou. they have six legs if they're hexapods. which along with insects includes Springtails (Collembola), Coneheads (Protura) and the two-pronged bristletails (Diplura, not closely related to other things called "bristletails).

Commonly referred to as ‘Coneheads’, Protura are tiny Hexapods (related to insects), around 1 to 2 mm in length. They're wingless, eyeless, and lack pigmentation and antennae. Instead of antennae, they raise their front pair of legs forwards as they move, which are covered in sensory hairs. 🧪

Dat is nog niet helemaal duidelijk, maar vooralsnog rekenen we ze samen met dubbelstaarten (Diplura) en poottasters (Protura) tot de klasse Entognatha. Samen met de klasse Insecta vormen ze de zespotigen (Hexapoda).

With this, we’ve completed a ‘trifecta,’ publishing on all the entognathous hexapods from southern Appalachia. It's admittedly just scratching the surface, but fascinating!

I'll also do a google scholar search, like "protura mouthparts", and find some morphology-focused modern papers, then look in those papers to try to follow the citations back to some good old morphology papers :)

ah, ok, the spelling is different, its entognatha with internalized mouthparts and ectognatha with external mouthparts. I usually just start with a google image search and follow whatever bread crumbs I find there. For ex. i searched "protura mouthparts" and found some nice SEMs. 2/

Whoops! The proleg above is from Protura, a wingless hexapod, not a Lepidopteran! Here is Snodgrass 1931, Fig 37 of his interpretation of moth proleg as having a coxa.
