It’s time.

I fucking love the Provensens
Alice and Martin Provensen - cover artwork for The Fireside Cook Book (1949). The work they did for this particular cook book was astounding. Here, in this thread, I'll post original full color pieces - all done in gouache - that were featured in the book. #wardsmorguefile 1/7

Artists, show what built your style!

Hard to just pick four, but Sendak, Paul Klee, The Tjong Khing, and the Provensens are pretty foundational.

More old Stuff: Beast Boy Lion from Teen Titans GO! They usually always gave me all of BB's animal transformations, so I was always cracking open my vintage Provensens or Mary Blair books since they're always my go-to source for animal design 👍#teentitansgo #warnerbrosanimation #characterdesign

Leo and Diane Dillon come immediately to mind. Their art has always fascinated me, as with the Provensens.

It's awful. But art by the Provensens does make me smile.

The Provensens illustrated A Year at Maple Hill Farm and An Owl and 3 Pussycats, which were favorites of me and my daughters! ❤️

I had this one with the Provensens' art, and it made me grow up strong and healthy tbh

Sendak for his dedication to emotional reality of kid lit. Klee for his textures and inventive use of materials. Khing pretty much defined what children’s book illustration was in the Netherlands for three decades.
The Provensens for their compositions, colour, and texture.

And these 4 additional illustrations from THE Provensens are gold, Jerry! Gold!

This was mine, the Provensens’ retelling of The Iliad snd The Odyssey. Read it in the school library and it presumably burned when the building went up from an arson attack in 1986.

Took forever to ID and find an affordable copy as an adult.

Going to put on some 1983 recordings of 103.3 WHTT “Boston’s Hit Radio,” drink some store brand grape tonic, and read the Provensens’ adaptation of Homer’s works.

Which means I’ll be travelling back to *two* legendary eras at once.

So the Provensens have an illustrated Odyssey? I didn’t know!

Texture is a really easy way to disguise simplicity in bgs also using solid color blocks to suggest depth or spot color with line overlays to suggest shape with limited detail. The golden book art of the Provensens, UPA and mid-century animation in general is a great place to study this cheat.

Decided it was finally time to own a copy of this treasure from my childhood public library. www.themarginalian.org/2013/08/14/i...

A few years ago I managed to get my hands on a 2nd hand copy of Jane Werner Watson’s 1956 kids book of Iliad & Odyssey with the amazing illustrations by the Provensens. My son devoured it.

I am aware they now sell for considerably more than I paid (indeed I believe is about to be reprinted). Vivid

Excellent. I have the Provensens' wonderful Golden Book of Mythology, my favorite book in early grade school years. I must have this edition! I love these illustrations.

I'd rather reread the Provensens' retelling of the Odyssey or the 1980s Nat Geo article where a Grecian archeologist plotted the route to very local, still existing landmarks instead of roaming the entire Mediterranean which would've made no sense for when the story was first codified.
