The ACT government has announced an extra public holiday for Anzac Day in 2027, as the commemorative event falls on a Sunday. This decision aims to provide certainty for veterans, workers, businesses, and community organisations while the government works on a permanent solution. Both April 25 (Sunday) and April 26 (Monday) will be declared public holidays, aligning with New South Wales' approach. Industrial Relations Minister Michael Pettersson emphasized the importance of Anzac Day as a national commemoration, ensuring the holiday arrangements respect its significance. Consultation will begin in 2028 to establish long-term solutions, considering social, commemorative, workforce, and economic factors. The Holidays Act 1958 allows for such declarations, and the government has previously adopted similar measures when Anzac Day fell on weekends. This decision avoids confusion with NSW and ensures consistent holiday practices. The move comes after the ACT government adjusted its approach in March 2026, adding an extra Monday holiday when Anzac Day fell on Saturday. The decision reflects a balance between honoring the day's historical importance and practical considerations for the community.
