My first time visiting Germany from the US, I was in awe at how punctual, quiet, and smooth the trains were (looking at you SF BART). I was surprised at how critical Germans were of DB; didn't they know how good they had it? After traveling by train in Switzerland, I get it now.
Damn I am tired of people laughing about Deutsche Bahn.
Travel in many other places in Europe and you will discover Germany is trying to do many things right with its railways. A quick blog post / rant from me:

Your Deutsche Bahn "joke" is no longer funny (if it ever was)
Before attempting my record attempt between Kemijärvi, Finland and Lagos, Portugal, people told me over and over it would break down in Germany. So much so that I even tried to re-but (pre-but?) some of the likely critique.

I enjoy travelling with DB. Things go wrong. But my last few trips in Germany have been really punctual, easy to get a seat, had something nice to eat and drink on board. And kudos to the staff having to deal with when it goes wrong!

My favourite example is Zürich and Bologna basing their transit priority policies in the 1970-80s on punctual measurements and qualitative data points while data-rich contemporary NA transit agencies still can't figure out how to do effective TSP.
