GAAP is simply one step on humanity's long quest for the perfect accounting standards. From recording wheat in the ziggurat, to XLOOKUP, human progress is driven towards our true purpose of counting stuff
capitalism's two greatest inventions are insurance and GAAP
How do we design a system robust enough to not just to mitigate the individual instances of people acting in bad faith, but stop motivating it all together (beyond just relying on the fact that most of us try to act in good faith)

There's also a big difference between debt driven by investment in public goods like healthcare and infrastructure, and debt driven by senseless tax breaks that serve no purpose but greed.
