Bo LeMay is one of seven pilots participating in a NASA project called INSPYRE, which began this summer to study pyrocumulonimbus clouds, by sending planes into them to collect samples and data. The project’s scientists, he said, “want to fly ideally through the top of the thunderstorm.”

NASA Campaign Explores Clouds Spawned by Wildfires
The Wildhorse grass fire in eastern Idaho erupted with a massive pulse of smoke. No one had expected it, but the wildfire had launched what’s known as a pyrocumulonimbus cloud, or pyroCb. It was an elusive weather phenomenon that scientists on NASA’s INSPYRE (INjected Smoke and PYRocumulonimbus Experiment) campaign spent weeks this summer hunting across […]

Wildfires can generate their own thunderstorms through pyrocumulonimbus clouds. These clouds can have an outsized impact on the stratosphere, too, injecting smoke and particulates that can linger for years to come.

What state recently came out of an 11-year drought? Ah yes—Queensland. And the Australian wildfires in 2020 are when I first learned of the existence of “pyrocumulonimbus” clouds. Sounds like a great place for a data center. 😐

One of the last places you want to see an out-of-control wildfire is in an array of defense contractor ammunitions bunkers. Homes at risk, as well. The Bunker Fire in southern Arkansas quickly blossomed to over 2,000 acres yesterday and is contributing to a pyrocumulonimbus cloud this afternoon.

Fascinating what happens here! The reverse is also true, imagine the mass flow of the Plume back to the ground, and how these “Pyrocumulus or Fire-born Cumulus Clouds” might dissipate or actually collapse back down, instead of being distributed up into the atmosphere…

Wildfires can build their own thunderstorms. Pyrocumulonimbus clouds punch smoke miles up into the atmosphere, and NASA is now flying aircraft straight into them to sample it. A fire making its own weather is the part I keep turning over. #Science #STEM

Measurements trace European wildfire smoke high into upper troposphere
The images of the major forest fires in Spain and France, with fire clouds near Bordeaux, have shocked many people. There have been numerous reports of the formation of a pyrocumulonimbus cloud—a fire-driven thundercloud—and the possible transport of smoke particles to Central Europe.

French wildfire created a monster cloud, unleashing lightning that ignited more fires
PARIS (AP) — A wildfire in southwest France grew so powerful that its towering smoke column became a thunderstorm, generating lightning that struck the ground and ignited new fires beyond the original blaze, French officials said. The so-called pyrocumulonimbus — which France’s national firefighters federation said had never before been seen in the country — […]

Terrified imagining what this may mean for Australia. Large bushfires generate pyrocumulonimbus weather patterns, fire thunderstorms that ignite further blazes ahead of the main conflagration.

More extreme weather will almost certainly accelerate the bushfire cycle, making these more common.
