Color in the kiln before sunrise!
and we're still improving on it. thats my favorite part i think. pyrometric cones are less than 150 years old. i dont have a kiln capable of ceramics but i use the same kind of controller that they have and i looked up when it was patented and it was like the 80s

With his hair slumping over first like a pyrometric cone in a kiln.
Occasionally, the kiln gets a bit too enthusiastic. We rely on pyrometric cones to monitor the heat inside the kiln. This particular area? 🔥🔥Cone 11🔥🔥 completely melted… that’s approximately 2,345°F. It got pretty intense in this section 😅

Pyrometric Witness Cones
![Today I assisted with the kiln loading and learned all about these dudes: cones.
Image: two cones placed on newspaper. The one on the left is a cream colour, bent completely over onto the page. The one on the left is pink in colour and standing upright. Both are pressed into a piece of stoneware clay. They are both Cone 10.
Ceramic is fired to a cone rather than a temperature. The cone on the left has been fired, and deformed (a little too much). The one on the right has been prepared to be placed inside a kiln for firing tonight.
“Pyrometric cones are designed to deform at certain moments during a firing. This deforming action allows the kiln to shut off automatically at the proper point or simply records what happened during the firing [a witness cone].
The exact moment the cone deforms depends primarily upon two factors: time and temperature. The temperature present at the moment "cone" is achieved depends upon the rate of temperature increase.”
The goal is to not under fire or over fire.

The blistered one is over fired. Does your kiln share use pyrometric cones in the firing? I fire My kiln to cone 6, but if I use a hold at the end or it is very densely packed the cones come out at full 7 or sometimes even higher. Your clay may be sensitive to over firing.

A question: When I first saw this one, I thought it had slumped over in the kiln. But could you do that intentionally? Could you make a figurine out of pyrometric cone clay, so that when it hits a certain temp, it slumps with an element of randomness, which could look cool.

The small antenna like things on the shelves are pyrometric cones, used to test the temperatures achieved in different parts of the kiln.

This is #underglaze. Paint bisqueware with colours and dip in a clear coat of standard glaze & fire to pyrometric cone temp 05_06 . Low fire temps are still 1800 degrees-ish but the encapsulated colours can survive. Glaze and clay can be formulated to vitrify at many kiln temps and atmospheres.
