I think the fact that I knew a lot about my Racalmuto family for generations and had the address of the home my grandmother was born and my clear enthusiasm about it did the trick.

Against every frugal instinct I have, I'm going to take the hotel's advice & pay 120 euros for a private car to visit my grandmother's town. My other option was taking a taxi into unlovely Agrigento, then a local bus (of which there are few) to and from Racalmuto, then finding another taxi back

re: Peter Robb’s book Midnight in Sicily: this description of Italian writer Sciascia: ‘After the war he became a primary school teacher in Racalmuto, where he felt unease at instructing children faint with hunger in the achievements of the Italian renaissance.’

"It's brutal, very brutal. You arrive home, open the taps to shower, and there's no water. You never get used to it," Peppe Manno, a driver in Racalmuto, told me. on.ft.com/3JJueXP

New on the blog today, my thoughts on THE DAY OF THE OWL by Leonardo Sciascia.

A brilliant, groundbreaking crime novella that explores the mafia's role in organised crime and the codes of silence which act as barriers to the justice system. #BookSky 💙📚

"In the bus no one moved; the driver sat, as if turned to stone, his right hand on the brake, his left on the steering-wheel. The conductor looked round the passengers’ faces, which were blank as the blinds.
‘They’ve killed him,’ he said;" #BookSky 💙📚

My dad came from the village of Grotte, less than a mile east of Racalmuto. It's remarkable to see a freak connection like this on social media reading posts of a follower of a follower.

In this case, I have a feeling that Racalmuto didn't look so very different as it did when my grandmother lived there except with a lot more cars, yet I still did not feel connected. Even when I came across storefronts with her family name on them, it was cool, but I didn't feel connected.

#HamOnt Yesterday, I joined Hamilton’s Racalmutese community for the Festa Maria del Monte!

This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as we also marked 40 years of friendship between Hamilton and Racalmuto.

Thank you to everyone keeping these traditions alive for future generations.
