Labyrinth, but it's also a queer coming of age story with a racebent cast.
People wonder why I always say that Lil Nas X should be the only choice for a new Goblin King if we ever get a redux of Labyrinth, and then I sit them down and show them things like this and they get right on board.

similarly, he could fund not just an all-white adaptation of The Odyssey, but racebent versions of the Ramayana, Journey to the West, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the Sundiata as well. but, again, he just wants to be mad, not to affirmatively advance his vision of the world

"racebent Solo prequel" is both an incredible premise for a movie and would make the Internet explode

Started watching the Interview With the Vampire show.

This is a fantastic way of handling racebent casting in adapting a mostly-white source material. They're not pretending for a second that racism didn't exist in the past and are using those experiences to inform the characterizations.

I’m intrigued but also what if Hallmark’s racebent S&S had this level of financing & production. 😭
SENSE AND SENSIBILITY starring Daisy Edgar-Jones. Directed by Georgia Oakley.

Coming soon from Focus Features and Working Title Films.

i think a point can be made about how race-neutral (or even deliberately racebent a la hamilton) casting is selectively applied to side characters (whereas the Main Guy generally has to be white) but wilson is not successfully making that point. or even really trying to make it tbh
this is nonsense! and kinda insulting!

Our March piece is live! @amandaraeprescott.bsky.social goes deep on racism in period drama fandom, tracing the history of responses to inclusive and racebent casting, and zeroing in on the complicated dynamics of Bridgerton's global fandom. Read the piece or listen to a full audio version:
Bridgerton and Period Drama Fandom’s Enduring Racism Problem — Fansplaining
Complaints about historical accuracy and acting quality are often dog-whistles: some fans only want to see white actors—and white history—on screen.

I like to say the difference between Oliver Queen and Bruce Wayne is that Bruce can be racebent but Oliver Queen must be white. His story is about reckoning with privilege.

My book about race in fandom came out yesterday! If you like Les Mis, thoughts about racebent headcanons and analysis of Tumblr AUs, please tell your library to order a copy!

#Blacktober 2025 has begun! Some friends once suggested, "Since Aira Shiratori is part-French, maybe he could be part-Haitian too?" I loved that idea!♥️ 🇯🇵+🇭🇹+🇫🇷

I also find the insistence that Christopher Rice was browbeaten into ignoring his mom's wishes and accepting racebent IWTV characters really laughable because he and his mother were all they had for basically most of his life. He for sure knew her better than anyone. He greenlit this w/ her in mind

...the efforts they have to take to protect media where they ARE represented; the community spaces they form with other black women to practice fandom; the hostility they receive for uplifting black female characters, especially "racebent" ones; and more

A decision you're so angry about that you haven't actually bothered to check the details.

(not a movie, not about Henry VIII, deliberately used racebent casting as a narrative point, employed one of the UK's most prominent Tudor historians as a consultant)

non-white actors being cast as racebent versions of formerly white played characters would be totally fine under normal circumstances but there's something kind of...sinister about the way it's been happening as of late, idk. like these companies are so quick to throw them under the bus when—

Hey, if anything needs and update and reform/reappraisal, its the Belgariad.

I've also seen Silk/Kheldar art that has been racebent, so I'm thoroughly down for this.

On the other hand, it gave roles for POC actors that they wouldn't have had otherwise, and the alternative is an all-white film (since all the racebent characters were based on specific real people). I dunno.

Watched Mary Queen of Scots (2018) last night and the racebent casting bothered me in a way it doesn't for, say, Arthurian adaptations and the like. Feels like a whitewashing of history to pretend that 16th Century England was a nice place for POCs when the slave trade and shit had already started.

People are already running for the tried and true fandom reaction to a racebent Black female lead with PJO by saying Leah and Walker have no chemistry so they don't see percabeth happening and this is with what... 2 eps out? Also both actors are CHILDREN who clearly work well together. I hate fandom

Yep. Snape and Voldemort are the only two I would say should not be racebent ever.

I wasn't planning on watching the series anyway but definitely more so now.

So I’ve been reading this political drama/religious horror mashup—The West Wong by way of The Exorcist—and man…

I promise you, I always aim to meet any piece on its own terms, to accept its premise in good faith.

But it’s difficult to read a comic about genderbent/racebent President Bartlet…
