Centaur radiology requires *more* radiologists, not fewer. A centaur radiologist processes *fewer* X-rays (because sometimes the chatbot tells them to double-check a diagnosis) than an unassisted radiologist. LLM-assisted radiology improves *quality*, not *quantity*.

But a chatbot that produces thousands of radiology reports for a single (reverse centaur) radiologist to approve at a velocity that precludes careful scrutiny is going to kill people.

The pronouncements of AI companies aren't just marketing hype, they're attempts at self-fulfilling prophecy. If you convince all the would-be radiologists that the profession is about to be vaporized by chatbots, those people will not study radiology.
November 3, 2026 at 2:32 PM
That's not what AI companies are selling. An AI company can't turn a profit by raising the cost of radiology (even if that improves the quality of radiological analyses).

All the radiology techs at Mt. Sinai are dressed in skeleton costumes today! 😂🎃

This is one of the underappreciated consequences of AI mania. AI bosses are particularly interested in convincing us that AI can do the job of skilled professionals in fields where there is a chronic undersupply of experts, like radiology.
November 3, 2026 at 2:32 PM
So the firehouse of announcements from AI companies are *always* about putting radiologists out on the breadline - not about needing *more* radiologists, who will get a new radiology tool that helps them work better, if a little more slowly.

Had my GP consultation about the nerve compression in my spine/neck/shoulder just before 2pm, he agreed to refer me to outpatient radiology. Radiology have just telephoned, they have a slot next Monday at 3pm if I'm available.

Having dealt with an AI radiology service in my own field, I agree wholeheartedly.
I understand there are hiccups in every new technology. Until AI works perfectly it should NOT be dealing with medical patient care/customer service.

This isn’t an “oopsie your HBO Max has ads when you’re paying for no ads.”

It’s serious health stuff! Fuck off!!!
I’ve now experienced AI fucking up TWO medical things for me in the past month.

1. Sent me the wrong summary of a bad blood test result via patient portal that scared the shit out of me

2. An AI agent (who I did not know was an AI agent) called me today to schedule a test my doctor did not order

Notice how the curie was redefined to not properly measure radiology against reality but the decimal system.

I had my annual physical this morning at a center with radiology, gynecology, internal medicine. The #COVIDdenialism in healthcare is sickening. Thankfully at least a few techs were wearing masks. I was asked at least three times whether I'd received this year's flu shot, nothing re the COVID vaxx.

Got through the pulmonary test which had no ball blowing, but an incredible amount of blowing did happen. Now just radiology. Then home, eat, shower and off to the Midterm watchparty this evening with IndivisibleMOV.

Radical idea: fund public services like healthcare and healthcare facilities from taxes on the wealthy instead of from the largesse of the wealthy.

Begging the rich for needed hospital equipment is pathetic.
