But it wasn’t until the fibula was reduced – and effectively liberated from the ankle joint – that avialans like Rahonavis and Ichthyornis could really spin their knee joints using the same mechanism retained by birds today.

I like you, have a dino fact.

Rahonavis it was a small bird like theropod that lived in what is now Madagascar in the Late Cretaceous.

It’s name means ‘cloud menace bird’.

It’s exact classification is debated. As some think it belongs to dromaeosaurids (raptors).

Backlog time! These pieces were all centered on the Maevarano Formation of Cretaceous Madagascar. The pieces include Majungasaurus, Simosuchus, Masiakasaurus, Madtsoia, Falcatakely, Rahonavis and Beelzebufo!

despite their proposed role in courtship, it's unlikely that the horns were a sexually dimorphic feature, as there is no evidence for this in the related majungasaurus, which also possessed cranial ornamentation

5) 🦖New insights into the evolution of theropod air sacs! Our study “The evolution of the air sac system in theropod dinosaurs: Evidence from the Upper Cretaceous of Madagascar” revealed distinct evolutionary paths in theropod pneumatic bone tissues.

The evolution of the air sac system in theropod dinosaurs: Evidence from the Upper Cretaceous of Madagascar
Theropod pneumatic bone tissues show an increase in complexity from the ceratosaurian Majungasaurus to the early paravian Rahonavis.

🦖 Daily Dino 🦖; Rahonavis ostromi

A small bird-like creature from Late Cretaceous Madagascar whose direct classification is disputed; some consider it an avialan, while others suggest it was an unenlagiine dromeosaur. It is generally agreed that Rahonavis could fly

Fact 28: Is often misidentified as a Velociraptor (actual genus is Rahonavis).
