The eye of Hurricane Erin is visible from the San Juan radar. Also lots of lightning in the outer rainbands. Glad the bulk of Erin is staying away from the islands. Hoping for a miss as well regarding Bermuda.

I've seen these narrow cold frontal rainbands do some wild things in my time in SF. Urban flooding, tornado warnings, violent wind gusts. Be cautious!

Busy weather day, with passing of the narrow cold-frontal rainbands or NCFR’s, the post frontal instability was fun to photograph with a rare shelf cloud over the Sonoma Coast, repuscular rays and nearly full moon rise. @pressdemo.bsky.social

One of the biggest rainbands in years will deliver rain to about 80% of Australia over the next 5 days. This system will be great news for drought-affected areas in southern Australia.

Speculation on my part but my hypotheses:
1) Residual mid-level shear of 15-25kt kept rainbands from forming on Melissa’s W side. Despite symmetric core, 34-kt radii was very asymmetric due to shear/convective asymmetry.
2) 30-31C SSTs moistening BL dry air n/ core preventing inner eyewall decay.

For Vela it would be the sunny cool early autumn cloudtowers pushing greyblue rainbands over windswept plains towards a soft slope. Distant thunder and a light jacket accompanied by a hot beverage under still pale blue sky.

It illustrates the nearly 100 tornado warnings (red polygons) that were issued as the rainbands moved inland... and as usual, the vast majority occurred in the storm's front-right quadrant.
