I was 35 when I started my PhD and my stipend was $26,500 that first year. The year after I finished it went up to $35,000 a year, which is still too low!

“The PhD stipend is $33,511 … well below minimum wage of $47,627”

“Universities can raise the stipend to a maximum of $52,352, but a ACGR survey found none have done so. The highest stipend is just over $40,000 … with the average at $34,244.”

The Universities Accord said #RaiseTheStipend, but nothing’s happened.

Tell parliament you want action!

Universities Accord: "#RaiseTheStipend!"

Everyone: 🥳 By how much?

UA: "$47k is “more competitive with other countries”.

Me👇: Wow, "a sweet $10 per week more than minimum wage. I’m sure the best students will be beating down university doors … probably looking for food."
I wrote a grumpy-but-hopeful little summary of some ARC-related things in the Universities Accord Report for the EduResearch Matters blog edited by Jenna Price👇

Oh, and #RaiseTheStipend!

I hope the Universities Accord strongly recommends a huge increase to the minimum government PhD stipend. Any hints, Jason Clare?

Many PhD students live below the poverty line. That’s simply disgraceful.
