Helicoprion gets all the love, but you know my favorite fossil ratfish? Edestus. Think of a shark-shaped fish about the size of a great white with jaws like pinking shears. 🧪

Ok, so we need to talk about ghost sharks.

Why?

Because today is Ghost Shark Day. Also, I just learned something that’s kinda cool about one species of ghost shark - the spotted ratfish.

I really did try to save the poor female ratfish. I figured out how to scoop her up without being jabbed by her spine, which she was very adamantly trying to stab me with, and I threw her into deeper water, in the hopes that she could swim away.

Coolest fish is a ratfish and they have teeth on the head for mating. @karlycohen.bsky.social's most recent with a great Ray Troll piece of art.

Every time I had seen a ratfish photo, I had assumed that the eye color was the result of eyeshine from flash.

It's not. They look like this in direct light. It's WEIRD.

Saws, scissors, and more, the oceans used to be full of huge ratfish relatives with amazing teeth. So what happened to them? I dive in over at Smithsonian Magazine. 🧪
