my favoritest bees ever, the flying teddybears (Melissodes spp) are out and I love them so I had this wild idea to add them to my growing pile of visual bee ID keys

This uhhhh may be a way bigger undertaking than I realized. What do mean mean ID hinges on the color of tiny hair on one abdomen band?

Happy Wednesday 🌞

These are Ratibida Red Midget or Mexican Hat plant.

I liked the look of this flower, so grown them from seed. An unusual flower but the dark crimson petals are fabulous.

Happy Gardening everyone 🇬🇧🌱

Of course we also did some botany, adding several new wildflower species. Oreocarya thyrsiflora (Limestone Cat's-Eye) had the best name, but Grindelia hirsutula (Hairy Gumweed) was very cool--each flower exuded milky sap 6/n

🌸 Welcome to another #WildflowerFriday!

Today's featured wildflower is gray-headed coneflower (Ratibida pinnata)!

🩶 While also known as the yellow coneflower, the gray in its name comes from the fact that the central cone starts gray.

The brief rain we had a few days ago has brought out the insects. This long-horned bee was feeding on the yellow cone flower, Ratibida pinnata. These fuzzy bees have really cool eyes! #NativePlants

Found this guy, Prairie coneflower (Ratibida columnifera), in the field at work today. It’s new to me, so that’s always exciting!

The smoke has cleared (at least for now), the sun is shining, and bees are buzzing around the front yard pocket prairie, with wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), and yellow coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) in bloom
