Rattlesnakes – Shadows in the Night Review
To find success as a new heavy metal act, a band must often walk the tightrope between evoking the olde while supplying enough originality to stand out. Slithering out of Nottingham, England, Rattlesnakes arrives ready to do just that as they sink their teeth into unsuspecting listeners. Formed in 2024, Rattlesnakes wasted no time in cutting a single that year and EP Deeper Shades of Torment the following April. Now eighteen months later, the quintet arrives primed with grit and venom to deliver their speed-addled debut Shadows in the Night. On it, Rattlesnakes carves their name into the desk of heavy metal alongside retro rockers Chastain and Znöwhite as well as newfangled acts like Tower, Mean Mistreater, and Sölicitör. These Brits play hard-rocking heavy metal with anthemic choruses girded by polished performances and a wicked siren’s glamour. Heavy metal might not be as popular today as some of the bastard genres it spawned, but bands like Rattlesnakes keep the mother sauce of metal alive through trveness and moxie. But just how long a Shadow does Rattlesnakes cast? Rattlesnakes shakes and bakes with boisterous performances that ooze with fun. Guitarists Josh Brown and George Charleston lay down fancy fretwork that spans from soulful (“Where the River Meets the Sea”) to sizzling (“Shadows in the Night,” “Even Gods Can Die”), manifesting fist-pumping antics that rely more on tight, nimble songwriting than sheer technicality. Comprising Rattlesnakes’ rhythm section, bassist Elliott Dryden and drummer Nathan Gratton untether flowing grooves and low-end punch that conspire within Shadows in the Night to propel the album ever onward. The production choices uplift the performances even further, leveling the sonic arena between six-string onslaughts and drum ‘n’ bass thunder. Soaring atop the instrumentation, singer Rowena Neale unleashes powerhouse vocals that prowl between coarse rasps, silky struts, and sultry twangs, all of which scintillate with earnest confidence. Her control and command enliven the already mighty musical backbone of Rattlesnakes, and altogether Shadows in the Night sounds like a band that’s been playing together much longer than a couple of years. More than just enchanting performances, Rattlesnakes brings everything together to craft lean tunes designed to get blood pumping and bodies jumping. “Shadows in the Night” and “Destroyer” thrum with high-octane blitzes, unceremoniously pushing and shoving with lip-curling attitude. Elsewhere, mid-paced bops “Forever” and “Spellbound” please with sleaze as they slink out from the Shadows, offering leather-clad amusements rife with dirtbag charm, and I love every inch of it. “Breakdown,” “Lost nor Found,” and “The Other Side of Midnight” roost between these moods, filling the gaps as Rattlesnakes navigates shifting paces and atmospheres in a way that offers continuity without ever getting mired in complacency or comfort. Interestingly, the biggest strength of Shadows in the Night also defines its biggest opportunity. Make no mistake, “Where the River Meets the Sea” steals the show as a bona fide, slow-burning rager. The soft, lilting intro flush with clean strums and tender strings reminds me of Dio, and when Neale kicks in with Stevie Nicks-coded cleans, I’m smitten. The emotive violin/viola1 radiates poignancy, and its continued presence as the energy billows into full force cleverly asserts songwriting finesse. Same goes for the flute solo that passes the melody to the guitar as the song climaxes. Stepping back, however, I realize that what makes “Where the River Meets the Sea” so damn great also sets it far enough apart from Shadows’ other material that altogether they feel disjointed. Granted, if the song closed the album, I might feel differently. It’s big, and it’s epic, and squeezing in “For Even Gods Can Die” at the end betrays the lingering power “Where the River Meets the Sea” leaves behind. Even so, Rattlesnakes delivers a heaping slab of satisfying heavy metal, and if it feels like I harped on some minor things here, I agree. There’s not much else to harp on. Ultimately, Shadows in the Night preserves the synthesis of classic rock and heavy metal as Rattlesnakes straddles the line between vintage and novel. They call out wanting to try something a little different on “Where the River Meets the Sea,” and even though Shadows in the Night doesn’t sound as unified with it, the album would absolutely suffer without. Rattlesnakes submits an ambitious and dynamic debut, and following this rich vein of inspiration will hopefully spell even greater success for their future. Until then, I’ll keep some anti-venom on hand, because Rattlesnakes’ bite is one I can’t resist. --- Rating: Very Good DR: 8 | Format Reviewed: 320 kbps mp3 Label: Listenable Records Websites: Bandcamp | Facebook | Instagram Releases Worldwide: October 30th, 2026 The post Rattlesnakes – Shadows in the Night Review appeared first on Angry Metal Guy.

Hidden Pigmy-This was the last of 6 Pigmy Rattlesnakes we saw this day. This was definitely the smallest. It was about 5 feet off the trail. The single palm frond leaf hid it from the trail and I doubt anyone else even saw it. The leaf gives a good size comparison. Pic separate.🐍

Snakes shed their skin to survive. When their old skin starts to become too small, the snake’s vision becomes blurred and it becomes irritable.

Just imagine if we,too, were to change our opinions at regular intervals to adapt to a changing reality.
Let’s make room for growth again today😘
