"羅臼" Rausu, Hokkaido.
Rausu is a town in the southeastern part of the Shiretoko Peninsula and is one of the bases for Shiretoko sightseeing.
Length 70cm （27.5in). This pennant was produced around 1970s or 1980s. #vintage
1, Rausu pennant. It has a photo printed on paper and decorated with yellow fringe. This pennant depicts Mt. Rausu, the town of Rausu, and the fishing port. It also depicts a cave where Hikarigoke moss grows wild. 2, Enlargement of the photo. Rausu, the town and Rausu fishing port with Mt. Rausu and the rugged terrain in the background. 3, Enlarged photo of the right side of the pennant. Entrance to a cave where Hikarigoke moss grows wild. Marker and signboard stating that the cave is a natural monument. 4, The title is in Japanese. The title is "Rausu" (yellow) in kanji characters. The caption is written in both Japanese and English. Japanese text: "The farthest port town" (blue). NATIONAL PARK" (blue) in English.

Mt. Rausu-dake is a 1661-meter-high （5449 ft）volcano located at the base of the Shiretoko Peninsula. This pennant is a view of Mt. Rausu-dake from the south.
Length 59cm （23.2in). Around 1970s or 1980s. #vintage
1, Mt. Rausu-dake pennant. It has a photo printed on paper and decorated with yellow fringe. 2, The photo shows Mt. Rausu-dake taken from the Rausu town side. 3, Enlarged photo. Mt.Rausu-dake, a volcano group with snow remaining behind the mountains of Shiretoko Peninsula. 4, The title is written both in Japanese and English. In kanji characters, the title is "Mt. Rausu-dake" (golden). The subtitle is "Shiretoko, an unexplored region" (pink) in Japanese and "NATIONAL PARK" (yellow) in English.

Cream (?) ribbon on left side of pennant. 2, Illustration is of the Fusen-iwa Rock （balloon rock）. The pennant depicts a Fusen-iwa Rock （balloon rock） that once stood at the tip of the Shiretoko Peninsula but collapsed and disappeared in the 1970s. 3, Enlargement of the illustration. The Fusen-iwa Rock in the calm sea is depicted like a sketch. The land of the cape is small in the back and hardly drawn. 4, Title in English and Roman script. "Rausu" (black) in writing. The caption is "National Park SHIRETOKO" (black) in Gothic.

Eurasian tree sparrow in Rausu, Hokkaido Japan. These fluff balls are tough little creatures - they remind me of our own black-capped chickadees that survive winters in the boreal forest in North America. It was 8F (-13C) that morning in Rausu when I took the photo. Click on photo for full size.

Good morning to you, from a very rainy, grey Tokyo. Getting prepped today for a shoot in Nagano-ken tomorrow. It'll be a very early start out from Tokyo tomorrow morning. So this little Alfie will be getting in to bed by 10pm at the very latest.

A line of sea birds sit on a breakwater just out from shore in Rausu, in the Shiretoko area of Hokkaido. That land you see behind them? That's Kunashiri-to (Kunashir Island or Кунаши́р). It's Russia. And just 22kms away. An old Japanese gentleman stands next to a wooden house on the beach near Rausu, Shiretoko, Japan. I photographed this lovely gent up in Rausu in 2019, during the ten days I was there making and presenting a tv programme for NHKWorld. This was where he lived as a child. The hut is called a "banya" and is the traditional type of fisherman's hut in Shiretoko. This chap now runs a boat tour company.

White-tailed Eagle in the harbour at Rausu, Japan. I was initially disappointed that poor weather meant we couldn't get to the edge of the pack ice, but it became a excellent morning for eagles as they scavenged around the fishing boats allowing for some very close approaches #birds #birding #japan
