Also, I love that the #Positron devs chose not to support .RData files.
When I work with RStudio users, I make a point of trying to set them down the right path, but that "save .RData by default" behavior makes it so easy to slip into bad habits before you know they're bad habits.

which will setup or modify your user-level (aka global) gitignore file to handle the most obvious R-associated files that probably don't belong in git.

If you're an #rstats user, one way to protect yourself from yourself is to do:
usethis::git_vaccinate()
which will setup or modify your user-level (aka global) gitignore file to handle the most obvious R-associated files that probably don't belong in git.

Typically one .R that does basic data processing and cleaning that often results in several data objects that are saved as .RData. Then load that .RData in a quarto doc for the analysis "proper", which might be a lab report or manuscript. Data stored in raw form alongside for full reproducibility

What is it with younger folks (career wise) not using .RData files? It's so confusing to me. Especially when a process or workflow takes a long time to run. Why not save the objects so you don't have to rerun everything? Am I just old?

Thanks to you, saving .RData is part of my workflow now. Soooo helpful. I think training on basic programming skills and computer literacy is simply lacking. A more upstream problem I see is people not having an understanding of file paths and folders and the question is “save rdata where?”

hmm. now i'm curious if an environment where the list is decomposed into its elements would be larger or smaller than the lm object, or exactly the same size. (that said, iirc rds/rdata storage is hilariously inefficient)

oh and I still don't understand the .Rdata shenanigans. RStudio is very cool with autosaving your env so you can access variables and functions when you open your project again without re-running everything again.
