#SST26 day 4: experimental
the TPSS Fonf-Téchnan - what would soon become TIAMAT's first godkiller - fields a new reactionless drive prototype that would become emblematic of TIAMAT itself in the coming years

14) Ships with reactionless/high efficiency drives result in unlimited delta-V, which makes it trivially easy to turn anything into a kinetic kill projectile at relativistic speeds.

This led to Burnside's Advice:

Friends don't let friends use reactionless drives in their SF novels.

Track fuel.

"UGGHH Superman would totally smash the person he saved at high speed, so dumb!!"

dude, The guy has the power of reactionless flight..

the epstein drive is not reactionless
science fiction fans: oh jeez imagine if the epstein drive were real what kind of future would we live in

science fiction fans: that's not what we meant but we'll take it

Protests are not cringe. Activism is not cringe.

You know what IS cringe?
Tone-policing and undermining people’s messaging & methods so much that we end up with a reactionless, watered-down, softball rebuke of the system that accomplishes nothing.
Honestly I think people are too quick to use the word cringe. To me, cringe is when I’m a little secondhand embarrassed but it’s ultimately harmless. Nothing cringe about millions of people wanting to speak out

they have reactionless thrusters

RETVRN TO ENGINES

Originally I switched to reactionless drives because I couldn't balance the engines, but they also turned out to cause more problems than they solved. But now I came up with an actually viable engine design so I'm going back to that!

A special "Actinide"-class gunframe, she's more of an arcology and fortress built around a 75 km-long gun and glued to a reactionless drive than a warship

Cross-section of the interstellar Arkships from Exodus.
They're 2315 meters long, use fusion tokamak reactors to power a reactionless drive to accelerate at 1g to high fractions of C, and are protected by a 'plasma buffer'.

why the fuck can't more reactionless drive users commit to the bit when the bit is so potentially amazing
I once pointed out that when the HMS Fearless crash-started her edges in On Basilisk Station, you'd be able to follow her orbit plot from the mountain ranges that the tidal stresses pulled out of the mantle of Medusa.

David siiiiiighed at me.

That limited understanding should make everyone *more* skeptical that we've created it by accident, like a guy who doesn't understand basic physics claiming to have created a quantum reactionless drive out of stuff in their garage. Call it what you like, you're engaging in motivated reasoning.

they should invent a type of propulsion that is reactionless

yep. He was completely reactionless as he kept repeating that line! 🚩🚩🚩

Sometimes you just fancy wrapping yourself around someone's thoughtless body whilst they mindlessly stand there, completely reactionless.

A popular UK comedy club, Top Secret Comedy Club, has banned audience members with botox after comedians complained that "reactionless" faces made it difficult to gauge audience engagement.

Is it just me, or is this start-up low-key claiming they've invented some form of anti-gravity/reactionless propulsion?

much like @kenburnside.bsky.social's "friends don't let friends use reactionless drives in their universes," my view is "friends don't let friends use time travel in their universes, unless time travel is the fundamental motivation of the universe"

one of us lies and one of us always tells the truth and if you learn which of us guards which door, you'll find a reactionless drive behind it...but the other door leads to death!
the main difference between me and @dragoncobolt.bsky.social is that one of us likes mass effect and the other likes blades in the dark

is it silly that I use the term "magnetic windrider" to refer to Q-drives in my setting... I always worry that 'Q-drive' is insufficiently descriptive and will be interpreted as a magic reactionless engine. RAIR is even less descriptive of a name I suppose but also feels less superscience-y.

reactionless drive? haha babe ur so funny! u know thats not real. it just emits a lllllott of neutrinos. haha nooo! i gotta have my lil girly secrets. srsly dont worry ur pretty lil head about where. or how. its fine i promise
