After much introspection, I bought a December calendar so I can readvent myself.

12/24. My Christmas Eve present to myself. #readvent #Booksky

My Libby app says I've read >90 e-books this year, but hard copy books are accumulating faster than I'm reading them. To incentivize some reading of physical pages, I'll share 1 per day and read the one that gets the most comments in the last week of 2024. #readvent

One of the very few books-I-bought-myself-new on my TBR pile. Several years ago now... 😳 #readvent #booksky

Finished the first book on my #readvent list. A fascinating unconventional life of an early 19th century Icelandic woman fishing captain, adventurer, and pursuer of justice. No overarching narrative arc with climax, but then what real life has one? I thoroughly enjoyed this book. #booksky
And it appears I'm still a day behind, so here's what I just opened up on my Libby app. It looks fabulous. #readvent

Are you a sucker for popular science books about your field of study? I am. I cannot pass up a book about rivers, but this recent acquisition is still on the to be read pile. Should I prioritize it? #readvent

What’s behind the final door, no.24 of the Retromash Readvent Calendar?

It has to be. The classic ‘The Night Before Christmas’. I have read this every Christmas Eve of my life. First is my own children’s version which has great art. And below that is my childhood one. Amazing.

I love memoirs, especially by women and ones that touch upon science, so I'm really looking forward to reading this one by @doctorzedd.bsky.social. I also bought a copy for my mom, a retired botanist. Now I just need to read my copy. #readvent

Alfred Hitchcock presents The Three Investigators. I loved these books. I never got into the Hardy Boys or the Enid Blyton teen adventure books. But these ones were great. Always found it cool having the link to Hitchcock.

I adored this book as a child. I always liked the Gulliver story anyway, but the art in this is just incredible. Martin Aitchison, the famous illustrator of Eagle comic and Ladybird books doing amazing work.

12/19. I think I started this library sale purchase and had to put it down and never picked it back up, but I should. #booksky #readvent

12/23. I bought this book by local author (and UVM grad student) Ethan Tapper as a potential present for my mother, but I flipped it open, read 2 pages and decided I was keeping it for myself. #readvent #booksky

Ack, and then I missed another day. This book has been on my to read list for too long. I think this might tick all the boxes post-AGU. #readvent #Booksky

This one has been on my wishlist for years and I was gleeful when our library book sale had it. Prominent 19C geologist with a secret Black life and wife. Now I just need to actually read it. #readvent

Colemanballs was a great little collection of funny quotes and mistakes from sports commentators and the like. I loved the first one as a kid and have collected the rest as an adult.

As we are right on the cusp of Halloween spooky season finishing I thought I’d start with this amazing book by Usborne. Loads of interesting info and beautiful artwork. This book fascinated me when I was younger.

Another Usborne book. Escape from Blood Castle. This book was great. More than just a ‘choose your own adventure’ clone. It was a whodunnit, with puzzles and clues etc. Lots of happy memories playing this. More pics…

12/22. at this point my list devolves into things I bought myself while shopping for others. I have 2 kids obsessed with trains and a British husband, how could I pass up this classic for the family? #readvent #booksky

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was a seminal book in my life. I’m a huge Douglas Adams fan and I just adored this book growing up. Have since collected every Douglas Adams book for my collection.

Bought this book after hearing an interview with the author on @npr.org. Sounds really cool! But is mid-winter the right time to read it? #readvent

I went on a big Golden Age mystery kick a while ago, and while I've read all the Sayers and Heyer, I have quite a bit of Christie to go. So this was picked up at the library book sale. Should I take it on my trip next week? #readvent #booksky

Today I admit that I haven't read this book that @allochthonous.bsky.social gave me sometime pre-2020. But I should. I really should. #readvent #booksky

Willy and the Square World. I have a very vivid memory of buying this book in the legendary Jolly Giant toy shop in Glasgow. Loved the book. Only realised as an adult that it was written by Jeffrey Archer!
