Reconstruction of the Fables ... whatever you call it, it's R.E.M.'s third steeped in Southern Gothic and some out-there characters. They traveled to London to record the album and worked with Joe Boyd -- known for his work with Nick Drake and Richard Thompson. The bleak surroundings in London clearly amped up their preoccupation with the American South. There's a lot of nostalgia on display for both the region and the band itself and fans and critics were a little "non-plussed" about the whole thing.
