The Unbearable Lightness of Being

"The idea of eternal return is a mysterious one, and Nietzsche has often perplexed other philosophers with it: to think that everything recurs as we once experienced it, and that
the recurrence itself recurs ad infinitum..."

You can see some of these stereotypes - the simple, morally pure countryside vs. the morally compromised, inauthentic city - play out in Greek and Roman literature.

So this is a very old idea that recurs regularly.
Do other countries have this weird notion that you’re not a “real” representative of the nation if you live in an urban center? Like do the French say Parisians aren’t really French? Are you considered not a real German if you live in Berlin? Or is this mainly a weird American thing?

The recurring nightmare recurs.
Duffy: "The president is talking about shower heads. You don't have enough water that can come through your shower heads because of Biden's regulations. So fixing small things like that -- hopefully he's gonna get the dishwashers. Wouldn't it be great if dishwashers worked again?"

🌱🍑🌹 Part 2 of #RoseWednesday, Miniature Shrub Rose (Rosa) 'Apricot Drift®' (Meilland International, 2009) is my favorite from this great series. Eyecatching color, bloom recurs in quick cycles, and will often flower past the first hard freezes of Autumn. Rosaceae

Co-signing this contribution to a discourse that recurs every few months and never seems to go anywhere useful.
my Blackest opinion is that the presumption of conflict between "America has a long and deeply rooted history of violence" and "we can and should fight against today's version of that, as did those who came before us" is less a philosophical debate about how to treat the past and more a skill issue

Imagine a world where people fought to protect the gains won by Black and Brown people that benefit everyone. Imagine a world where people remembered that authoritarian regimes always start with the least protected and work their way up. Fascism recurs over and over because of bigotry
Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.

I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

People are saying Trump’s name recurs 600+ times…
So apparently there are many Epstein files on the DOJ website where you can highlight the redacted text, copy it, and paste it onto another document to read the redactions

I realize that apparently a lot of folks cannot distinguish between what is 'natural' (smallpox, for instance, all natural) and what is 'good' but this is pretty clearly an ideological configuration that recurs in a wide range of cultures and political circumstances.

this pattern recurs in ai-stuff, where there will be something just so obviously and vastly threatening that people refuse to talk about it, but generate reactions that are proportionate to it and yet focused on things that make no sense whatsoever

The argument sits alongside a more recognizable one—that tuition guarantees *exacerbate* the harms of the allegedly discriminatory admissions policies.

But “free tuition based on income = race discrimination” is absolutely not a throwaway. It recurs and is re-emphasized throughout

Errol Morris: WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOU 'HAVE THE MEATS?'"
Robert McNamara: You look through history, this question of who has the meats recurs. And I'd say that, at lunchtime....there are truths about value, nutritional value and vis-a-vis price, that are immutable.

the other problem, which recurs regularly and isn’t Jeffries-specific, is that the job of Speaker/Minority Leader is mostly about wrangling the caucus but because the party doesn’t have an official leader when it doesn’t hold the White House they end up the party face
