There is no pivoting from genocide. There's no refocusing on kitchen table issues--a madman with an itching to drop nukes is threatening to eradicate a country. There is no planning session for this, there is only action.

it doesn’t seem to me like the practical effect of refocusing the attention of weakly partisan Trump voters on politics is likely to raise these numbers

Beyond this specific -- important! -- issue, one of the ways the NASA budget shows its own unseriousness is it says we're refocusing on Mars... while shutting down the communications and monitoring infrastructure we've already placed in orbit there!
I just learned that ESA's Trace Gas Orbiter relays some data to Earth via Roscosmos.
If NASA terminates MAVEN, the only US orbiter will be MRO—which means ever more data from Curiosity and Perseverance will have to go through TGO.
Do we know for sure those data *won't* go through Russia to the US?
