Planet one was a bust. Turns out a meteorite disintegrated in the atmosphere into a regolith-like shrapnel that traveled in the air. Then a mushroom adapted to that and used the it as an airborne filter feeding system.

it's true! it annoys me that it's become fashionable as of late to sniff at his terraforming timeline and proclaim that it will take Minimum >1 ka, as if we will not ever refine our knowledge of planetary science beyond sota 2026, as if it is impossible to detoxify and hydrate the regolith, etc

The paper mentions earning a high school named in your honor if you succeed. I’m less interested in the eponym than in whether the fungi can handle perchlorate toxicity without dying first.
The secret to growing food on Mars could be fungi
Scientists think beneficial fungi could help transform nutrient-poor lunar and Martian regolith into a material capable of supporting crops. By helping plants access nutrients and withstand harsh conditions, these microbes could someday make self-sustaining space farming more realistic.

The secret to growing food on Mars could be fungi
That vision may still be decades away, but researchers in the United States and Brazil are already examining whether fungi could make space agriculture more practical. In a review recently published in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, the team explored how beneficial fungi might help convert hostile lunar and Martian regolith into a more biologically suitable material for growing crops. Fungi Could Help Make Space Regolith Farmable Lunar and Martian regolith are poor environments for agriculture because they lack several nutrients that plants need to thrive. The researchers focused especially on shortages of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, along with ways those limitations might be overcome. Beneficial fungi could offer one possible solution. These organisms play an important role in nutrient cycling on Earth and can help plants, soils, and other organisms gain access to essential resources. The review examined fungal species that have already been shown to support plant growth by improving nutrient uptake, including under abiotic (non-living organism) stress. The researchers also considered fungi that have been used aboard the International Space Station. Extending a Plant's Root System Abiotic stress is particularly important for crops grown in nutrient poor materials such as lunar and Martian regolith. Plants would...

mars bases and microbes evolved for the regolith and whatnot are boring half measures until then. the way to actually colonize mars is to develop safe superintelligence and build a Dyson swarm

Got to try out Verse Project, which is best described as "I got annoyed at Star Citizen and Elite, so I made my own," and honestly it's really impressive, though obviously still very early because there's not much to do right now. It has walking around, already multiplayer, already has planets.

ESA partnered with LEGO to make 3D-printed 'space bricks' that inspire next-gen space engineers. Instead of transporting building materials to the Moon, we use the lunar regolith—rock and mineral fragments covering the Moon’s surface to create space bricks. www.zmescience.com/space/lego-s...

I won't get too far into the lore yet, but the first real presence on Luna is GM (yes, General Motors) led by John DeLorean with Gerard O'Neill as CTO. For alternate history space nerds, that means a mass driver on the surface, and LaGrange stations to refine and process sintered regolith.
