What game remakes have effectively replaced the original?

the 1980s horror trio of remakes sits weird in my thoughts because they're THE go to examples of "well, this time, remakes were good!" (Blob, Fly, Thing). But they're just conceptual remakes, throwing out the original scripts and swinging at the current political, cultural realities

Live action remakes of animated flims will be banned.
What's your most ridiculous, newly emboldened political demand?

(Absurd answers only.)

To be clear, I am generally extremely pro remake when there’s a reason. The Trails in the Sky remakes are exceptional. I adore the FF7 remake trilogy. The Resident Evil remakes are masterclasses. Sometimes they are real labors of love and reinterpretations worth engaging with!

I take back what I said until Persona 1 and 2 and 2-2 get their remakes, THEN you can stop all remakes forever
Guys... I don't think I want video games to be remade and remastered anymore :(

It's interesting to me that video game remakes have, on average, been much better than "live-action" remakes of animated films.

Now if only Nintendo would start crediting the original developers in their remakes

none have and none should. i think the idea of remakes being a replacement is kinda gross actually

I think even the one to one remakes haven't replaced them. I would definitely go play the original Shadow of the Colossus today.

As we approach our third journey through Ocarina of Time, @omgmorejames.bsky.social wonders if The Legend of Zelda could eventually become something akin to modern mythology through ongoing, transformative remakes of its cyclical central tragedy.

Play It Again: On Remakes and The Cycle of Zelda's Modern Mythology
The Legend of Zelda is one of gaming’s few ongoing mythologies. Could iterative remakes imbue its cyclical tragedy with new humanity?

Neil Druckmann is being chained to a desk until he completes 3 separate thematically accurate and appropriate remakes of South of Midnight

It's not that unusual that remakes of popular games fail to meet expectations and completely disappoint their legacy.

Perfect Dark XBLA

Most remakes/remasters are strict replacements for me, unless they drastically change gameplay (ala FFVII).

In the specific case of remakes of PS1/N64 games, I basically never go back to the original.

Remakes I love:

TTYD
Reload
RE4R
FF7R (though idk if these count as a remake)
Link's Awakening
HGSS/ORAS

Remakes I know I'll love:

OoT
Revival

Ironically, as someone who can get quite purist about game remakes and remasters, I always get annoyed by people who judge remakes purely on how much of the original game they replicate

Estão botando PORRA nos remakes

Remakes are best seen as conversations between two parallel works and even as arguments/shouting matches at times.

Within that framing the question then becomes determining the content of the conversations and not "who won."
Am a broken record on this but it's sad the way games are treated not as these artistic statements to be cherished but as products waiting for their next upgrade.

To say this OoT remake is "the game as it always was" is literally and figuratively dishonest

Very happy it's being well received.
Remakes and remasters are good for games. Keep em coming!

Not too many Japanese remakes of Canadian films.
