#remoteness
The decline of local press and growth of groups on social media has created space for spreading of false or misleading narratives while the decline of both churches and local pubs has weakened pressures to conform to previous norms. Reinforced by remoteness of government.

The key is English uses remoteness (usually called the past tense) in 4 different areas - remoteness in time (the past), remoteness from reality (conditionals), remoteness in relationship (politeness), and remoteness from the moment of speaking (reported speech). Four topics, one mechanism.

The different gentoo penguins have only subtle size and vocalization differences but their DNA is distinct.

The remoteness of their home helps explain why this species was not previously identified.

Most of us only know of Heard Island for entirely absurd tariffs on penguins reasons.

Nevertheless while belief, even in visionary form, ecstatic & humble, can licence exclusivism & judgement, this mystic’s account of the adept’s self-abnegating existence, seeking enlightenment, knowing its impossible remoteness, never vain, always learning, parallels what a poetic vocation should be

Yes, but...pneumonic plague needs to be treated very quickly, within 24 hours or so of onset, and is far more likely to be fatal than bubonic plague. I wonder if just the sheer size of Russia/remoteness is playing a role here.

TON 618 breaks my brain. Videos like this give me a genuine sense of dread and unease.

This is the cosmic horror that Lovecraft was aiming for, but worse because it's real. There are unfathomable monsters out there, and our only defense is our remoteness and insignificance.

Patagonia, My Gateway to Nature
When most people hear the word “Patagonia,” ideas of remoteness, isolation, vastness, emptiness or desert come to mind. To me, Patagonia is home. It is the place where I was born, where I grew up, and where I am now lucky to be back again living and working. I grew up along the coast of the Rio Negro River in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Glaciers along the Andes provide ample water for this river to flow across hundreds of kilometers of the arid Patagonian steppe, creating a productive oasis. My family is originally from a small town further south called Jacobacci, where sheep farmers cope with a harsh environment, massive winter snowstorms, and attacks by pumas and foxes on their sheep. Most of my vacations growing up were split between family visits there and the magnificent Andes range to the west. I have always been an observer of nature. Hiking through Patagonia showed me first-hand that we had plenty of space to improve the way we relate with the species and ecosystems around us. My academic studies in ecology, conservation, and environmental sciences were my intellectual attempt at trying to better understand how nature works and how we can protect it...

Exactly this. The shared rural experience (lack of transport and other infrastructure, remoteness from political understanding let alone decision-making) is too often disregarded in favour of seductive cliche and quaint-hungry othering (“picturesque but primitive”) entirely at odds with the facts.

My view on Burnham is that he is very well suited to the political moment. Leaders like Blair and Obama were preternaturally talented communicators. But their sheer charisma made them seem like celebrities, lending them a sort of remoteness and "eliteness" that I think voters no longer want

Mixed feelings about this. It is a great place, but maybe the Monument designation was enough to protect it while keeping it from getting overwhelmed. A lot of the prime rocks are concentrated in a small area. On the other hand, its remoteness may keep away too many from coming there as well.
