Nike has abruptly closed over a dozen of its small-format neighborhood-focused stores across the United States, as part of a broader strategic realignment. The closures, which span 13 states including California, New York, and Texas, mark a shift from Nike's earlier plans to expand the Nike Live concept globally to 200 locations. Originally launched in Los Angeles in 2018, Nike Live stores integrated customer data to tailor product selections and leverage the Nike app for personalized shopping experiences. However, the initiative faced challenges under former CEO John Donahoe, prompting a strategic overhaul under current CEO Elliott Hill. The closures are part of Nike's effort to streamline its physical retail footprint and prioritize wholesale partnerships while investing in an integrated marketplace. Despite reducing the number of neighborhood stores, Nike remains committed to community-focused retail through collaborations like the Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker project in Los Angeles, which combines fitness, creative spaces, and local programming. The company emphasized that these changes are part of a long-term strategy to enhance customer experiences and adapt to evolving market demands.
