I’m an earthquake scientist and I reduce seismic risks, especially to critical lifeline infrastructure. My goals are to increase seismic resilience of society, and to reduce human suffering and economic losses that could otherwise result if seismic retrofits and other mitigation work weren’t done.

that makes sense i got the bug too. for places. in my case pass thru stuff that is old and industriall wanna stop & look at all of it. delivered to a really old building greebled as fuck with years of retrofits. wanted to stay & just look at everything

Liquid Cooling Retrofits: Hard, but Sometimes Worth It
There is little question that liquid cooling is becoming an increasingly attractive way to manage rising heat loads inside data centers, especially as operators deploy denser racks and more AI infrastructure. In many scenarios, liquid cooling can improve thermal efficiency and reduce dependence on large volumes of airflow. It can also help operators curb water use in designs that would otherwise rely heavily on evaporative cooling. The challenge, however, is that most existing data centers were not designed with liquid cooling in mind. Retrofitting an older facility to support liquid cooling can be technically feasible, but it is rarely simple. Here’s a look at why retrofits are difficult – and when the investment may still make sense. Why Liquid Cooling Retrofits Are Difficult From a logistical standpoint, installing liquid cooling is relatively easy when building a new data center. Designers can account for piping, rack loads, redundancy, heat rejection, and maintenance access from the start. It is much harder when an operator wants to retrofit an existing facility, whether to replace or supplement a traditional air-based cooling design. In that case, several challenges tend to stand in the way. Space Constraints Complicate Piping Liquid cooling systems require supply and return...
