I'm glad there's been some softening - it's better than what came before. But it remains cruel, anti-integration, retrospective, and utterly without purpose.

The right to live in the UK forever will no longer be granted to migrants almost automatically after 5 years. Instead, it will be earned, under the new earned settlement model set out before Parliament today.
labour are fucking over immigrants with a (retrospective!) doubling of the time the immigration process takes in a completely futile attempt to appeal to the sorts of people who want to bring back hanging for anyone who knows a language other than english. our left-wing party, everyone

This debate is ridiculous. The £10 bn figure should have been zero. The loss of deterred workers who would be net contributors will be similar under the new proposal. And either way, punitive, retrospective rule-changes are tools of illiberal governments.

a massive immigration rule change, *retrospective* at that, *also* adding retrospective work requirements to visas which had no work element, which will ruin countless lives across work, spouse, student routes, all based on a lie. the big top has suffered a catastrophic number of escapees

This is so upsetting. The changes the Labour government proposes to ILR are cruel, unnecessary and a betrayal of the Labour values Burnham talks about. Making them retrospective is unjustifiable.
a little browsing on skilledworkersUK subreddit tells you that people's lives are upended for no reason. it's hard to imagine anyone who's not limited by family or relationships is not gonna leave. "I'm going home, so I guess the reform voters won".
