If you cycle in Normandy, all you see is flax. France grows over 50% of the world’s textile flax. This region has the perfect mix of deep silty soil and a mild, damp oceanic climate, allowing for "dew retting" where the rain and sun naturally separate premium linen fibers right in the fields.

Før påskeferien tok jeg med tre rettebunker hjem. Det har gått veeeldig tregt med retting. Prøvde å ta resten nå i kveld, men det får bli i morgen.

Part of the Line Ponds on Skipwith Common in Vale of York. These are where flax would be retted (soaked) to extract the fibre for spinning into linen. Retting flax or hemp was a polluting activity, kept away from village water supplies. 'Tow dykes' elsewhere on the Common had a similar function.

Part of the Line Ponds on Skipwith Common in Vale of York. These are where flax would be retted (soaked) to extract the fibre for spinning into linen. Retting flax or hemp was a polluting activity, kept away from village water supplies. 'Tow dykes' elsewhere on the Common had a similar function.
