#rewidling
Despite the backlash in recent years (in Ireland anyway!), rewilding is now well established in academic and practical responses to the biodiversity crisis.

Rewilding: A meaningful response to tackling the biodiversity crisis
The concept is an eco-centric approach which is nature-led and human-enabled

New study confirms some of my 'mantras': shifts to plant-based diets, rewidling/reforesting, active transport, travel with no/less flying & ICE driving all bring human & planetary health cobenefits & are far more impactful for climate mitigation than CCS & nuclear ehp.niehs.nih.gov/doi/10.1289/...

Beavers could do that for us, yet another rewidling benefit of the magical beaver-that-solves-all-problems (put it on the tenner!)

Feeding crops to animals is inefficient and thus bad for the environment & food security, but feeding forage at scale is bad for the climate (www.theguardian.com/environment/...) and ignores the opportunity costs of the land used for forage (which could be used for crops, biomass, rewidling, etc.)
The most damaging farm products? Organic, pasture-fed beef and lamb
Analysis: You may be amazed by that answer, but the area of land used for grazing is vast compared with the meat and milk produced

This is where I have a problem with "rewidling". This isn't rewilding. It is creating a novel ecosystem with a species that never existed in the area (ever) backed up by only an assumption that it would fill the same niche to achieve an unrelated goal.
A project in Spain is bringing Przewalski’s horse to a sparsely populated region to help stem out-of-control fires and boost the local economy.

Rewilding Spain is attempting to rebuild ecological roles in the region to boost biodiversity and mitigate fire outbreaks.

Some 30,000 years ago, Stone Age people decorated a cave, today known as Cueva de los Casares, in central Spain with pictures of mating humans (most famously), geometric shapes, and animals. The most…

Polly, I loved this piece but can you say more about your dislike of the term rewilded - I'd not heard of it being used like that before, I see it as a positive thing. My substack is called 'rewidling my life' so I'm now worried I'm giving the wrong impression!

inspired by all this I asked the dumb machine and: a) I hate this article idea, it's shit; b) rewilding isn't a medievalist but a paleolithic fantasy; c) but if you know AFTER LONDON, well, there's an old weird book that does *both* rewidling and medievalism and I *could* write about that, crap.

Did you know?
Bumblebee population increases 116 times over in 'remarkable' Scotland rewilding project."
Read that again: **116** times.
