Amazing that RGCs can filter out background without losing sensitivity to light. I'm curious if the non-linear model results in delayed signal transduction. Would there be differences in prey species (mice) that need the fastest possible signal propagation to avoid predators?

This paper was an interesting read and provides a way to expand research of RGCs into more animal models. It would be neat to apply this to a nob3 model to see the RGC activity across mesopic and scotopic conditions. I'm also interested to see the super-resolution images.

One of those songs from my childhood that transports me to another place. Seeing the commercial on TV at my granny's house when I had no idea what Kingdom Hearts was, then later renting it from Movie Gallery on a Friday night when we finally had a PS2. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgCS...

Plot twist: The sticker on today's symposium swag bag is actually my cell culture image! This image shows a mixed culture of immature and mature RGCs isolated from retinal organoids, stained for beta III tubulin (orange) and BRN3B (green)
October 16, 2026 at 2:28 PM
While some RGCs look fully mature, others are still in development we're currently exploring how adding specific factors to the growth medium can help accelerate this maturation process.
Always exciting to see lab work step out of the incubator and into the real world! 🧬✨

We re-visited this question using a mouse line in which Isl1 deletion was restricted to amacrine/horizontal cell precursors so we could figure out what Isl1 is doing specifically in SACs without affecting RGCs and BCs

October 12, 2026 at 3:54 PM
Previous work from the Gan lab had shown that pan-retinal deletion of Isl1 led to a loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), bipolar cells (BCs), and startburst amacrine cells (SACs). Since these cells are all connected in a functional circuit, it is hard to know what Isl1 is doing in each type
