MARK MAY | SPECIAL TO RGVSPORTS HARLINGEN – It was a moment that will live in Valley sports lore forever. During the bottom of the seventh inning of the state championship, the Weslaco High softball team’s Andrea Ortiz belted a grand slam, lifting the Lady Panthers to an 11-9 victory over Waco Midway. It was, and still is, the only state championship in softball won by a Valley team. Afterward, coach Mario Rodriguez was named state coach of the year by the Texas Sports Writers Association. “What I remember most from the state championship game in 2024 was the team’s never-give-up attitude in their dramatic comeback win, the walk-off grand slam by Andrea Ortiz, and the strong fan support, not just from Weslaco but from the whole RGV,” Rodriguez said. (Andrew Cordero | Special to The Monitor) Now, after nearly 20 years of coaching and winning more than 400 games, Rodriguez is set to be inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame. He will join volleyball coach Diana Lerma plus five others as part of the Hall of Fame class of 2025. The other five include former McAllen Memorial baseball player Jake Gautreau, high school football coach Monty Stumbaugh, former Roma basketball player Juan Escobar, former NFL player Roberto Garza and retired football official Ford Sasser. In addition, five teams that left an imprint in Valley sports history will be recognized for the Hall of Honor. The induction event will be Saturday, June 28, at the Harlingen Convention Center. The doors will open at 4 p.m., dinner will be served at 5 p.m. and the ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 each and can be purchased on the RGV Sports Hall of Fame website (www.rgvshof.net). Although the state title win was both thrilling and historic, Rodriguez got into the Hall of Fame based on more than just that winning home run. In 19 seasons as head coach (through 2025), Rodriguez has guided the Lady Panthers into the playoffs 15 times and has won 425 games. His teams have accumulated four district championships, eight bi-district titles, six area pennants, four regional quarterfinal battles, three regional semifinal wins, two regional titles and two appearances in the state final four (2016 an ‘24). He has earned 10 coach of the year titles at the district, area, regional and state level. (Joel Martinez | [email protected]) “I am filled with immense gratitude and humility for this (Hall of Fame induction) is something that I never thought I could achieve,” he said. “This recognition is not just a personal milestone but a testament to the collective efforts of many softball players, parents, coaches and administrators who have been part of my coaching journey.” Like Rodriguez, who is from Weslaco, Diana Lerma also has made a mark in her hometown. In her case, it is Mission. She has coached her teams to more than 800 victories on the volleyball court. Before graduating from Mission High, Lerma played all kinds of sports before playing collegiate volleyball on a full scholarship. Mission Veterans volleyball coach Diana Lerma. (Courtesy Photo | RGV Sports Hall of Fame) “In high school, I was involved in cheerleading, basketball, cross country, track and volleyball,” Lerma said. “I was also involved in (the Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and was the president of (the Girls Athletic Association) in high school. I was unanimously named MVP for volleyball in high school as well.” Her high school coach was Carmela Martinez, herself a member of the RGV Sports Hall of Fame (class of 1999). Lerma’s prowess on the court continued at Laredo Junior College (twice named all-conference) and Southwest Texas State, where she earned all-Southland Conference recognition while setting a school record for aces. After college, a visit to her older sister, coach Lety Ibarra, got her interested in coaching. “I became her assistant at La Joya High School and the rest is history,” Lerma said. Following three winning seasons for La Joya High, Lerma’s Mission Veterans Memorial teams have won 18 district titles, 17 bi-district titles, 11 area championships and made four appearances in the Sweet 16. Most impressive is that in 23 seasons with the Lady Patriots, her teams have never missed the playoffs. “I enjoy the winning edge and working with kids to bring the very best out of them,” said Lerma, who has had more than 20 players earn volleyball scholarships. “We not only coach the game of volleyball, but we also coach in the game of life. It’s all about teamwork making the dream work.” Earlier this year, she was inducted into the Latin American International Sports Hall of Fame based in Laredo. On Nov. 22, 2024, the City of Mission declared it “Coach Diana T. Lerma Day.” This year’s class will bring the Hall of Fame’s membership to 304. The RGV Sports Hall of Fame also has a Hall of Honor for teams that excelled at the highest level of sports, winning championships and making deep runs in the postseason. In 1977, Edinburg High’s boys cross country team won a state title. The 1979 McAllen High girls cross country team was a state runner-up. The 1977 and 1980 Brownsville St. Joseph football team won TCIL state titles, and the 1977 Texas Southmost College baseball team qualified for the NJCAA Baseball World Series. Founded in 1985, the RGV Sports Hall of Fame is a not-for-profit organization whose mission it is to recognize men and women who have brought honor and recognition to the Rio Grande Valley through their participation in sports as an athlete, coach, official, trainer, journalist or other sports-related position. Ivan Palacios | Staff Writer BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Rivera has found its new man at the helm, naming longtime San Benito defensive coordinator Johnny Garza as the school’s new athletic coordinator and head football coach, Brownsville ISD athletic director Gilbert Leal confirmed to RGVSports.  “I know him as a person and I know his work ethic,” Leal said. “I know he’s been honored throughout the state for leading one of the top defenses year in and year out. He’s been the defensive coordinator at San Benito for the past six years. He’s really built something there and continued to build on something that was going really good. We’re just excited we’re going to be his first head coaching job, which is very excited in our profession. We’re just super excited to have him.” The new position marks Garza’s first time as a head coach, joining the Raiders after 11 years as an assistant coach at San Benito, including time as the team’s defensive coordinator. Prior to his coaching career, Garza played under then-San Benito head coach Mario Pena, suiting up as a linebacker for the Greyhounds. Garza is known for fielding some of the RGV’s stingiest defenses during his tenure with the Greyhounds, including a dominant 2022 season in which they allowed only 171.1 total yards and 8.0 points per game. San Benito’s “WarDog” defense ended the season ranked fourth in Class 6A in terms of points allowed. The first-year head coach is tasked with reviving a Brownsville Rivera program which has struggled over the past decade. The Raiders are 11 years removed from their last postseason appearance in 2014, amassing a 13-81 record during that span. “It’s not the best timing in the world,” Leal said. “It is not a bad way to start here in June though. Obviously he’s going in without spring football or an offseason or things like that. My recommendation to him is to consider this next fall as spring football. Our goal is to make sure we can get his staff in place and for him to build on the core values he sees he needs to do. I know bringing him in it’ll probably start with defense and building the foundation of where he sees the vision of where the team is going to be. Game 1 of a possible three for an area round title against McAllen Rowe looked destined for extra innings. The Lobos did not need to swing the bat. A wild pitch was all that was needed. Senior third baseman Adrian Garza scored the go-ahead run to give the Lobos a 1-0 series lead and a 3-2 victory Friday night in Palmview. “We were just hoping we could get a base hit or something, or something,” Lobos head coach Manuel Garcia Jr. said. “We have a lot of faith in our kids. We believe in them, we trust them and we have faith in them. We tell all of our players to stay alert and be in the game. Be in that moment.” Garza pounced on that moment and also had a chance with one out, but the pop fly into center field kept creeping in towards the infield. The throw was off target to the catcher, but Garcia Jr. elected not to send his runner on third. Not doing so paid off. He went 7 innings and struck out 7 batters. Martinez gave up two runs in the bottom of the second to the Warriors. Ivan Garza and Isaias Ledezma drove in the runs for McAllen Rowe. Edward Severn | Special to RGVSports BROWNSVILLE — The Rio Grande Valley long-distance runner is going to have more opportunities at home. Texas Southmost College is adding cross country to its athletic program. The Scorpions will be coached by longtime Valley cross country coach Basilio Mendoza. Mendoza was dragged out of retirement after coaching at Donna North, La Joya High, Valley View, Mission High, La Joya Palmview and Donna High for 23 years. The opportunity became apparent to Mendoza and he jumped on the honor of being able to start a program at TSC. “I think our leaders had a responsibility, I felt, to make a junior college for cross country, volleyball, etc … our kids have to leave just to run so far away. I think this will be a really good chance for the kids more than myself,” Mendoza said. Mendoza is eager to prepare for Fall 2025 with talented runners from the area. Mendoza ran collegiately in Ohio at the University of Findlay. “We will see what happens here. I looked at the results from last year’s regional and I think we have a shot as long as we have the right kids,” Mendoza said. “I am really patient, I never wear a whistle and I never yell. I want to make sure the athletes are welcome here. Hopefully, it will work out.” Mendoza is a little worried about the long drive, he said jokingly. He retired in Palmview, but coaching college was always something he wanted to do in life. TSC Athletic Director, Dr. Armando Ponce said cross country was the next step in growing the program. When the Scorpions announced a return of athletics with soccer two years ago, there was speculation on what would be next. “This is another sport that Valley athletes have a history of doing well at the state and collegiate level,” Ponce said. “So, with so much talent in the area we thought it’d be ideal to be the next sport we could offer.” Ponce said he heard plenty of positive things about Mendoza during the hiring process. “Everybody I asked in the cross country community told me that if there is one guy that you can get, it is coach Mendoza. Luckily for us, we were able to connect and bring him out of retirement. He has a lot of patient for athletes out of the Rio Grande Valley. He wants to see them succeed and he is right the person for the job,” Ponce said. TSC competes at the NJCAA level where athletes have two years of eligibility.

Notes: Tears of joy ran down Rouquette’s face as she crossed the finish line in first in the 300-meter hurdles during the Region IV-6A championships. The moment was years in the making, with the four-year letter winner punching her ticket to the state meet for the first time in her career. The Stephen F. Austin signee did it style as well, setting a Valley record during the race with a time of 42.63. The time broke the mark set by Edinburg North’s Leigha Brown in 2013. Rouquette’s record setting performance earned her the No. 3 seed heading into the state meet, giving her one of the inside lanes for the race. CLASS 5A McAllen High senior Dana Rojas Vazquez. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Dana Rojas Vazquez, senior, McAllen High State Track Appearances: 2023, 2024 2025 State Event(s): 1,600m; 3,200m PR(s): 4:55.82 (1,600m); 10:38.90 (3,200m) Favorite Meet: I think the Regional meet has been my favorite meet because it proved me that if I set my mind to it and just trust God to guide me through my race I can achieve anything. Notes: Rojas Vazquez’s senior season has been dominant. The senior earned her first podium finish at state during cross country season, coming in second during the Class 5A race. She’s carried that momentum onto the track, ranking in the top five in both of her state qualifying events this year. Rojas Vazquez holds the No. 4 fastest time in Class 5A in the 1,600-meter run this season, recording a personal best mark of 4:55.82 during the regional meet. Her best event is the 3,200-meter run, however, holding the No. 1 time in Class 5A. Rojas Vazquez mark of 10:38.90 set during the Area 31/32-5A championships ranks No. 2 all-time in the RGV. Rojas Vazquez will look to put the exclamation point on what has been an elite high school career at the state meet before taking her talent to the University of Houston next fall. McAllen High senior Dariana Luna. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Dariana Luna, senior, McAllen High State Track Appearances: 2024 2025 State Event(s): 100m Hurdles; 300m Hurdles; Long Jump PR(s): 13.84 (100m Hurdles); 43.35 (300m Hurdles); 18-8.25 (Long Jump) Favorite Meet: District finals was my favorite because in the 100 hurdle race I broke the all time valley record. Notes: You can’t talk 2025 RGV track without mentioning the name Luna. The senior athlete has done it all for the Bulldogs this season, competing in jumping, running and even throwing events this year. No surprise it’ll be much of the same at state, with Luna qualifying for three different events. Luna is set to be the only RGV athlete to compete in both field and running events at state, competing in the long jump, 100- and 300-meter hurdles. The UIW commit has dominated her region all season long in all three. At the Region IV-5A championships Luna racked up 28 points for her team, capturing titles in both hurdles event and a silver in the long jump. Luna could be set for another big day, seeded third and fourth in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, respectively, while also being a threat in the long jump. Edinburg Vela senior E’Mon Mason. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: E’Mon Mason, senior, Edinburg Vela State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 400m PR(s): 56.70 Favorite Meet: My favorite races were area and Texas A&M Bluebonnet because it really pushed me to be my best! Notes: Mason has gradually climbed her way up to becoming a state qualifier. As a sophomore, the SaberCats sprinter’s season ended in the area round. Last year she saw her year come to an end at regionals. This year she’s broken through again, advancing to the Class 5A state meet for the first time. The University of Dallas signee has put up consistent times during championship season, hanging around the 57-58 second mark. She enters the state meet fresh off her best race of the year, clocking in at a personal best time of 56.70 in the 400-meter dash during the regional meet. Donna High junior Lauren De La Garza. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Lauren De La Garza, junior, Donna High State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Discus PR(s): 136-8 Favorite Meet: Meet of Champions because that is the meet I broke 130 and broke my school’s record. Notes: What a year it has been for De La Garza. After back-to-back seasons ending in the area round, the Bravettes junior broke out this year, capturing Area 31/32-5A and Region IV-5A titles en route to her first career state appearance. De La Garza’s jump from Year 1 to Year 3 has been phenomenal, improving from a then-best mark of 86-3 as a freshman to a school record mark of 136-8 this season. Her junior year mark was also a nearly 10 foot improvement from her best throw last year. De La Garza doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon either, entering the state meet as the No. 3 seed in the Class 5A girls discus throw. A podium finish would put a bow on her breakout season, while also giving her momentum heading into her senior year. McAllen High junior Sophia Flores. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Sophia Flores, junior, McAllen High State Track Appearances: 2024 2025 State Event(s): 200m; 4×100; 4×200 PR(s): 24.67 (200m) Favorite Meet: My favorite meet had to be the regional meet, because everything we worked hard for had finally been put to the test and we won the meet. Notes: Flores made her state debut last season as a part of McHi’s 4×200 relay team. The junior sprinter is now set to make her individual debut after finishing second in the 200-meter dash during the Region IV-5A championships. Flores won’t just be competing in the 200-meter dash, however, also playing a key role on the Bulldogs 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams. Flores blistering speed is a big reason for McHi’s success in the relays, serving as the anchor in two of their three state qualifiers. Harlingen South junior Sophia Gonzalez. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Sophia Gonzalez, junior, Harlingen South State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Discus; Shot Put PR(s): 131-7 (Discus); 42-2.75 (Shot Put) Favorite Meet: My favorite meet of the 2025 season would have to be Meet of Champions because I had set a goal to PR in at least one event. And I ended up PR’ing in shot put and discus! Notes: Gonzalez is another RGV athlete amid a breakout year, qualifying for state in two events just one year after finishing in the bottom half at the area meet. The junior thrower captured a pair of silver medals during the regional meet, recording a personal best mark of 131-7 in the discus and a mark of 41-0.5 in the shot put. Gonzalez is seeded in the middle of the pack in both her events heading into state, but a strong showing can vault her into contender not only at the meet but for next season as well. McHi’s relay team holds the No. 1 fastest time in RGV history, breaking the record set by Harlingen High a season ago. The Bulldogs are seeded eighth in their race heading into state. Vanessa and Yaneli Rocha round out McHi’s 4×400 relay team, The Bulldogs don’t hold the record in the 4×400 like the other two relays, but they’ve come pretty close, ranking No. 2 in the RGV all-time. They enter the state meet seeded No. 7 in the event. Reaching the podium won’t be easy, but the increased competition could lead to some record breaking times for the ladies in purple and gold. CLASS 3A IDEA Pharr senior Naomi Cotero. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Naomi Cotero, senior, IDEA Pharr State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 3,200m PR(s): 11:28.12 Favorite Meet: My favorite race was in Edcouch when i was feeling sick. I did not feel like running the race, but my coach told me that you never know what could happen. Once I was stretching I knew I was going to feel bad, but I wouldn’t know until I finished my race. I ended up hitting a pr in the 800 by 5 seconds. I then felt bad and started vomiting, but it was worth it because I hit a good PR. Notes: Cotero set her mind on getting to state on the track this season after only qualifying in cross country the past three years. The senior distance runner achieved her goal, finishing as the Region IV-3A runner-up in the 3,200-meter run to secure a spot at the state meet. Cotero’s time at regionals seeds her No. 9 for the state meet, but don’t be surprised if she makes a run at the podium. The Lions’ senior holds the No. 4 fastest time in Class 3A this year, making her a serious threat to earn a medal. CLASS 2A La Villa senior Kaycei Salazar. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Kaycei Salazar, senior, La Villa State Track Appearances: 2023, 2024 2025 State Event(s): 800m; 1,600m; 3,200m PR(s): 2:17.28 (800m); 5:09.44 (1,600m); 11:25.01 (3,200m) Favorite Meet: N/A Notes: Salazar already has tons of state hardware to her name, winning a gold and a silver in the 1,600-meter run in 2023 and 2024, while also adding a silver in the 3,200-meter run in 2023. She’ll look to put the final stamp on her decorated high school career this weekend as she chases triple gold during the Class 2A state track and field championships. Salazar is one of two RGV athletes set to compete in three events at the state meet, with the Stephen F. Austin signee running in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. More impressively, Salazar ranks in the top 2 in each of those events, including holding the No. 1 mark in the 800-meter run in Class 2A this year. Salazar has already cemented herself as one of the top runners to come out of the Valley, but a triple crown would put her in a league of her own with no other female athlete winning more than two gold medals at state in the same year. TAPPS Brownsville St. Joseph sophomore Grace Cowen. (Courtesy Photo | Bloodhound Athletics) Name: Grace Cowen, sophomore, Brownsville St. Joseph State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 300m Hurdles PR(s): 48.52 Favorite Meet: N/A Notes: Cowen showed great promise as a freshman, qualifying for the TAPPS 5A South regional meet in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles. She is no longer just a regional qualifier, advancing to the TAPPS 5A state track and field championships after finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles at regionals. The sophomore hurdler is coming off her best time of the year, with her mark of 48.52 ranking No. 2 in TAPPS 5A this year. Another strong showing at state and Cowen might be able to add state medalist to her resume heading into next year. Brownsville St. Joseph junior Nicole Richer. (Courtesy Photo | Bloodhound Athletics) Name: Nicole Richer, junior, Brownsville St. Joseph State Track Appearances: 2023, 2024 2025 State Event(s): Pole Vault; 4×200 Relay PR(s): 11-7 Favorite Meet: I really enjoyed meet of champs where I could experience going up against of the valleys best and prove that I could defend my title. Going into the post season I love going to district with my team. Winning district as a girls team for the first time was the highlight of the season so far. Regionals also went well and I was pleased with my performance so now I look forward to defending my title at state. Notes: The reigning TAPPS 5A girls pole vault state medalist is back and ready to defend her title, with Richer preparing to compete in her third straight state meet. The junior vaulter quickly burst onto the scene as a freshman, capturing the bronze in the event that year. Last season she established herself as the best in her class, winning state gold with a then-personal best mark of 11-0. Richer is a favorite to repeat this season, with her personal best mark of 11-7 sitting nearly a foot ahead of the next closest mark in TAPPS 5A this season. Brownsville St. Joseph junior Oliva Wood. (Courtesy Photo | Bloodhound Athletics) Name: Olivia Wood, junior, Brownsville St. Joseph State Track Appearances: 2023, 2024 2025 State Event(s): Discus PR(s): 133-5 Favorite Meet: I love the district meet every year but especially this year because I was able to compete successfully, pr, and become district champion. Notes: Wood patiently waited for her moment after throwing alongside three-time state champion Alondra Loya her first two years. Her moment seems to have arrived, with the two-time state medalist looking like the favorite to win state gold in the TAPPS 5A discus this year. Wood enters the state meet ranked No. 1 in the TAPPS 5A in the event, sitting at the top with a personal best mark of 133-5. The next closest mark is nearly eight feet behind. Last year’s state runner-up is an experienced force in the ring and could very well keep the Bloodhounds tradition of elite throwers alive. Top, left to right, Victoria Flores and Jimena Herrera. The Bloodhounds enter the state meet seeded No. 5 in their race. Their time of 1:48.63 is not far off from some of the teams ahead of them, giving them a chance to reach the podium at state. The Bloodhounds recorded a season best time of 4:18.09 during the regional meet, finishing fourth to secure a state bid. SJA is seeded seventh heading into state.

CLASS 6A Harlingen High sophomore Jyazian Moore. Notes: Moore just missed out on a state appearance last season, finishing fourth in the high jump during the regional meet. The sophomore skipped out on the high jump during this year’s regional meet, instead focusing on the long jump. The decision paid off, with Moore set to make his state debut in the event after finishing second during the Region IV-6A championships. The second-year letterman is peaking at the right time, consistently hitting high 22 marks during championship season. He’s just two weeks removed from his personal best mark of 23-3.25, giving him momentum heading into the state meet. CLASS 5A Weslaco East senior Adrianno Gonzalez. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Adrianno Gonzalez, senior, Weslaco East State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 1,600m PR(s): 4:17.84 Favorite Meet: Regionals 2025. Being able to qualify for state and winning it as well while setting a personal best was just an amazing feeling. Notes: Gonzalez has been knocking on door of a state berth over the past two years, finishing in the top half of the event both years. The senior distance runner kicked the door down this season, capturing the Region IV-5A championship in the 1,600-meter run and securing his first state bid. The regional title marked the first of his career. Gonzalez’s season has been a roller coaster. He kicked off his 2025 campaign with win of the 1,600m during the Escobar Brothers Relays in Roma. Since then Gonzalez had finished no higher than second before his regional title, including three finishes outside the podium. The Wildcats senior seems to be picking up steam at the right time, however, with his personal best time of 4:17.84 during the regional meet earning him the No. 2 seed heading into the state meet. Sharyland Pioneer junior Angel Rodriguez (3096). (Joel Martinez | The Monitor) Name: Angel Rodriguez, junior, Sharyland Pioneer State Track Appearances: 2024 (Long Jump; 400m) 2025 State Event(s): 400m PR(s): 48.14 Favorite Meet: N/A Notes: Rodriguez is no stranger to the state meet, breaking through to the show as a sophomore last season. The now-junior is headed back to the state meet, earning a berth in the 400-meter dash for a second straight year. Rodriguez’s regional meet didn’t begin how he expected, finishing third during the long jump to just miss out on a state berth in the event. Fueled by the early end to his long jump season, Rodriguez ran furiously during the 400-meter dash, clocking in at a personal best time of 48.14 to secure silver and a return to state. The Diamondbacks runner enters the meet seeded eighth in the event. He finished eighth during last year’s state meet in the 400m dash. Mission High senior Christian Kirk. (Joel Martinez | The Monitor) Name: Christian Kirk, senior, Mission High State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Long Jump PR(s): 23-2.25 Favorite Meet: N/A Notes: Kirk made major jumps (no pun intended) his senior year, breaking past the 20 feet mark for the first time in his career. His breakthrough campaign allowed him to capture his first regional title and state bid of his career. After a shaky Meet of Champs, which ended with Kirk not making out of the prelims, the senior jumper has been on a tear, winning District 30-5A, Area 29/30-5A and Region IV-5A titles in the event. His best mark came during the area meet, recording a personal best jump of 23 feet, 2.25 inches. He followed it up by hitting the 23 feet mark once again at regionals to claim the regional title and a spot in Austin. Kirk enters the state meet seeded fourth in Class 5A. Sharyland Pioneer’s Derek Thompson. (Joel Martinez | The Monitor) Name: Derek Thompson, junior, Sharyland Pioneer State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Discus; Shot Put PR(s): 64-4 (Discus); 189-10 (Shot Put) Favorite Meet: Regionals because I hit a massive PR in shot put. Notes: What a return to the ring it has been for Thompson after an injury riddled sophomore campaign, earning state berths in discus and shot put during the regional meet. The pair of state bids are the first of his career. Thompson has racked up the hardware this season, compiling 19 podium finishes between the two events, including 16 gold medals. He isn’t done just yet, looking like a legit contender in both events heading into the state meet. His mark of 64-4 in the shot put ranks No. 2 in Class 5A this season, while his personal best mark of 189-10 in the discus is No. 3. McAllen High junior Jacksen Ahlman. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Jacksen Ahlman, junior, McAllen High State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 800m; 4×400 Relay PR(s): 1:54.22 (800m); 3:15.57 (4×400 Relay) Favorite Meet: Texas Relays. Notes: Ahlman got his first taste of regional action a season ago, finishing ninth during the 800-meter run to close out his sophomore campaign. The junior mid-distance runner came back with a vengeance this year, capturing the Region IV-5A championship in the event and securing his first career state berth. Ahlman has been as dominant as they come this year in the event, coming away with gold during six of his seven appearances. His lone loss came during the Hoka Distance Festival, a meet that feature nearly 200 athletes competing in the 800m run. Ahlman has also been crucial to McHi’s record-breaking 4×400 relay team, serving as the third leg on the Bulldogs’ regional championship squad. Edinburg Vela senior Kristopher Perez. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Kristopher Perez, senior, Edinburg Vela State Track Appearances: 2023, 2024 2025 State Event(s): Shot Put PR(s): 60-8 Favorite Meet: The Texas Relays because we had the deepest finals event in relays history and also the energy from the crowd and the people competing was unmatched. Notes: Perez has been a staple at the UIL state track and field championships the past two years, qualifying for the meet as both as sophomore and junior. He entered rare air this season, becoming just the fifth RGV boys thrower to reach the state meet three times. The University of Houston commit has consistently improved during each of his state appearances, finishing eighth as a sophomore in the shot put and sixth as a junior. This year he enters the meet as one of the top competitors in the event, ranking No. 6 in Class 5A in the event. Third time could be the charm for Perez, with a first ever state podium finish not out of the question. McAllen High senior Samuel Enriquez. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Samuel Enriquez, senior, McAllen High State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 200m; 4×200 Relay; 4×400 Relay PR(s): 21.63 (200m); 1:26.72 (4×200 Relay); 3:15.57 (4×400 Relay) Favorite Meet: The Region IV meet. We set a new school record & All-Time Valley’s best. Will Hawk ran the first leg in the relay prelims with appendicitis while qualifying us to finals. His best friend Tristan Keith ran for him in the finals to bring home the Regional Championship. Notes: After failing to make it to regionals during his first three years, Enriquez has been on another level as a senior, emerging as one of the top sprinters in the state. The Bulldogs sprinter opened his 2025 campaign by cracking the sub-22 second mark in the 200-meter dash, well above his season best of 24.21 last season. It’s only been up from there for Enriquez, taking home first in five of his six appearances in the event this season. Enriquez has remained consistent all season long with his times, staying within the 21-22 second range. At the area meet, the senior recorded his best mark of his career, clocking in at 21.61, the No. 7 best time in Class 5A this year. Enriquez’s blistering speed has also made him a weapon on the Bulldogs 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams, anchoring both squads to regional titles. Hawk won’t be available for the state meet again, but don’t think for a second that’ll slow down McHi’s relay team. Expect the Bulldogs to come out extra motivated by the absence of their teammate as they look to further cement themselves as one of the best relay teams to come out of the RGV. That is the first time we realized the true potential of the team when we ran a 3:17 under the lights in Austin. Notes: The second Bulldogs’ relay team to qualify for state, the 4×400 squad looks primed to make some noise in Austin. The team is made up of two individual state qualifiers in Ahlman (800m) and Enriquez (200m), while Sakalys and Rivas are also a part of the state qualifying 4×200 relay team. The Region IV-5A champions enter the meet with the No. 4 best time in Class 5A this year and the No. 2 best qualifying time during regionals. While success in relays has been hard to come by for RGV teams, the Bulldogs look ready to take a shot at the podium this year. CLASS 4A La Feria junior Anthony Morales. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Anthony Morales, junior, La Feria State Track Appearances: 2023, 2024 2025 State Event(s): 1,600m PR(s): 4:22.37 Favorite Meet: Texas Distance Festival because I was able to see the state’s best and was able to run with them. Notes: Morales has made it a habit of going to state, with the junior distance runner headed to Austin for a third straight year. One thing that has evaded him however is a podium finish. Third time could be the charm for Morales as he enters the state meet with the No. 8 fastest time in Class 4A this year. Morales is seeded No. 7 in his race, recording a time of 4:23.00 during the regional meet. Still, his PR of 4:22.37 shows he is within striking distance of a Top 3 spot, with the time just one second slower than the top three times. A big day from Morales could end his state medal dry spell. La Feria junior Armando Morales. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Armando Morales, junior, La Feria State Track Appearances: 2024 2025 State Event(s): 3,200m PR(s): 9:20.31 Favorite Meet: Texas Distance Festival because I was able to see the state’s best.  Notes: Morales made his state debut last season, earning a bronze in the Class 4A 3,200-meter run. The second half of La Feria’s twin duo is back and looking for more as he prepares to compete in the 3,200-meter run once again. The Class 4A cross country silver medalist is one of the best distance runners in the state, ranking No. 7 in the state this year. Championship season has been about surviving and advancing for Morales, coming in second during the District 32-4A, Area 31/32-4A and Region IV-4A meets. Morales is ready to leave it all on the track during state meet, however, hoping to reach the podium for the second time in his career. Port Isabel senior Christian Smith. (Photo Courtesy Port Isabel High School Facebook) Name: Christian Smith, senior, Port Isabel State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Triple Jump PR(s): 43-11.75 Favorite Meet: N/A Notes: Smith’s 2024 season ended in heartbreak last season, scratching during the regional meet before being able to record a mark. The senior jumper redeemed himself this year, finishing second in the triple jump during the Region IV-4A track and field championships. His silver medal finish earned him the first state berth of his career. Smith kicked off championship season by recording a mark of 43-0.5 to capture the District 32-4A crown. He followed it up by winning the Area 31/32-4A championship with a mark of 41-10.75. Smith is now coming off his best jump of his career, setting a personal best mark of 43-11.75 during the regional meet to punch his ticket to state. Hidalgo sophomore Pedro Sanchez. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Pedro Sanchez, sophomore, Hidalgo State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 800m PR(s): 2:01.10 Favorite Meet: Regionals because I qualified to state and thats something I’ve been wanting to accomplish for so long. Notes: Sanchez put an end to a stretch of nearly 15 years without a state qualifier for Hidalgo, becoming the first Pirates’ athlete to advance to Austin since 2011. The sophomore runner showed promise last season, getting all the way to the regional meet as a freshman. This year he broke through into the state meet with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run at regionals. His time of 2:01.10 was .13 seconds off from the gold medalist. Sanchez is seeded ninth in his event heading into state, but expect the sophomore mid-distance runner to soak up the experience and leave it all on the track. CLASS 3A Lyford senior Adrian Chavez. (Photo Courtesy Lyford High School Facebook) Name: Adrian Chavez, senior, Lyford State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): High Jump PR(s): 6-6 Favorite Meet: N/A Notes: Two inches kept Chavez out of the state meet last year, finishing third in the high jump at regionals with a mark of 6-2. The top two finishers advanced to Austin with marks of 6-2. Chavez did just enough to secure a state bid this season, finishing second at the regional meet with a mark of 6-3. The state appearance marks the first of his career. Chavez enters the state meet with District 32-3A and Area 31/32-3A titles under his belt, also claiming the RGVCA Meet of Champs title earlier this year. His season best mark of 6-4 is the No. 17 best mark in Class 3A this year. Don’t count Chavez out, however, with Lyford’s jumper recording a personal best mark of 6-6 last season. If he can return to that form, Chavez could find himself in the running for a spot on the podium. Raymondville senior Christopher Gonzalez. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Christopher Gonzalez, senior, Raymondville State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Long Jump PR(s): 22-9.5 Favorite Meet: The Albert T Relays because it was the first track meet of the season I opened up with 2 PRs in the 110 hurdles and the long jump. Notes: Gonzalez has been on the cusp of a state appearance the past two years, finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles at regionals in 2023 and 2024. The senior athlete is finally headed to state this year, only he’ll be going in a completely different event, qualifying in the long jump. Gonzalez’s long jump bid shouldn’t come as a surprise, however, ranking as one of the top athletes in the region in the event all season long. An injury has hampered the Bearkats senior recently, but that hasn’t stopped him from reaching the state meet, earning silver medals during district and regionals, while also capturing gold during the area meet. Gonzalez can put the final touches on a decorated athletic career with a strong performance at state. Vanguard Rembrandt senior Mario Luna. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Mario Luna, senior, Vanguard Rembrandt State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): 1,600m; 3,200m PR(s): 4:17.36 (1,600m); 9:40.47 (3,200m) Favorite Meet: Meet of Champs because that was the first race that allowed me to expose myself to competition and allowed me to PR. Notes: Luna delivered a statement performance during the RGVCA Meet of Champions this season, winning the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. The pair of wins was a sign of things to come, with Luna capturing a combined seven individual titles during championship season. The Spartans’ distance runner won District 32-3A titles in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, Area 31/32-3A titles in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and Region IV-3A crowns in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Luna enters the state meet with all the momentum on his side, looking to become the school’s first state champion. CLASS 1A Lasara senior Jose Ventura. (Andrew Cordero | Special to RGVSports) Name: Jose Ventura, senior, Lasara State Track Appearances: 2024 2025 State Event(s): 800m; 1,600m PR(s): 2:01.16 (800m); 4:38.40 (1,600m) Favorite Meet: Meet of champs because of the competition and atmosphere. Notes: Injuries plagued Ventura during his state debut last season, finishing ninth in the Class 1A 800-meter run. The four-year letter winner is back and better this year, looking to bring home hardware on the track for the first time in his career. Ventura is a force to be reckoned with in both his events, earning top two finishers in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs all throughout championship season. In the 800-meter run, Ventura ranks No. 5 in Class 1A this year. His best event is the 1,600-meter run, however, ranking No. 3 in Class 1A this season. Ventura has three state medals to his name in cross country. He can cap his decorated career with more hardware this Saturday. TAPPS Brownsville St. Joseph senior Diego De La Cruz. (Courtesy Photo | Bloodhound Athletics) Name: Diego De La Cruz, senior, Brownsville St. Joseph State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Shot Put PR(s): 43-5.5 Favorite Meet: N/A Notes: De La Cruz hadn’t competed in track and field since his sophomore year, with no stats available on Athletic.net or Texas MileSplit since 2023. That hasn’t matter this year, with the UTEP football signee heading to the TAPPS 5A state meet for the first time in his career. De La Cruz has been a force in the ring this season, capturing a district title with a mark of 41-10.5. He followed it up by earning a bronze medal and a trip to state during regionals, recording a personal best mark of 43-5.5. The mark ranks No. 10 in TAPPS 5A this year. De La Cruz is a long shot to reach the podium at state, but don’t be surprised if the Bloodhounds competitor gives other athletes a run for their money. Brownsville St. Joseph junior Reid Starkey. (Courtesy Photo | Bloodhound Athletics) Name: Reid Starkey, junior, Brownsville St. Joseph State Track Appearances: N/A 2025 State Event(s): Discus PR(s): 154-3 Favorite Meet: Discus because it’s what my grandpa loved to do so I want to follow his footsteps Notes: Starkey saw his sophomore campaign end in regionals last year, finishing fifth in the discus throw during the TAPPS 5A South Regional Championships. This year he’s emerged as one of the top throwers in the TAPPS 5A level, earning a pair of podium finishes during the district and regional meets to secure a spot at the state meet in Waco. Starkey delivered his best performance of his career during the regional meet last week, setting a personal best mark of 154-3 during the discus to secure silver in the event. The mark ranks No. 2 in TAPPS 5A this year, making him a candidate to become the latest SJA thrower to bring home some hardware.

MISSION — The top two teams in District 30-5A needed 15 innings and more than five hours to determine a winner as La Joya Palmview edged Mission Veterans 3-1 on Tuesday at Mission Veterans High School. The Lobos and Patriots scored one run each in the first inning to tie things at 1-1, but nothing came across for the next 13 innings until Palmview finally broke through in the top of the 15th. After a fielder’s choice for one out, Palmview’s Jaxzel Cantu brought in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to left field and Mateo Garcia scored on a passed ball to make it a 3-1 game heading to the bottom of the 15th.  Two strikeouts and a popout ended things as Palmview pitcher Javier Garza earned the win with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Joseph Martinez started the game for Palmview and pitched 6.2 innings with one earned run and eight strikeouts, and Jaime Cordova followed with 6.1 scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts. Mission Veterans starting pitcher Gabriel Cantu went seven innings and allowed one earned run off three hits and one walk while striking out eight. Jahzeil Treviño and Chris Ramos led the Patriots offensively with two hits apiece. DISTRICT 32-6A BROWNSVILLE HANNA 8, HARLINGEN HIGH 5: At Harlingen, the Golden Eagles scored seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings to stun the Cardinals in 32-6A play on Tuesday. After a 1-2-3 inning bottom of the sixth, Hanna put its first three batters to lead off the seventh with a Joseph Ruiz single, an Ari Hernandez bunt and a walk to Orlando Rico. Martinez tied the game with an RBI single to left field, Sebastian Escamilla singled to center to take a 5-4 lead, and a bases loaded walk to Alec Medellin put Hanna on top 6-4. Sanchez grounded into a fielder’s choice to bring in another run and Escamilla scored on an error for an 8-4 Golden Eagles lead. Rico picked up the win after allowing one earned run off one hit and four walks while striking out eight in 5.1 innings. Harlingen’s Isaiah Gaytan led the Cardinals on 2-for-4 hitting with two RBI.
