It would be nice if the RHSV (for whom I did a third-year undergrad project, and would have loved to rent an affordable apartment closer to uni and to the RHSV building) remembered that they are the Royal *Historical* Society of Victoria and not the Royal *Heritage* Society of Victoria

It’s wild how bad faith most the heritage institutions fundamentally are. From National Trust to RHSV they rather lie and fearmonger than mount a genuine case for heritage protections
Heritage activists slam the Victorian Government (for policies that don't actually exist)

Marilyn Lake delivers the next Hugh Anderson lecture at the RHSV in Melbourne Sept 9 at 5.30 pm. On Australian literary nationalism and links to China, featuring Hugh and Dawn, my parents. Dawn, now 96, usually says a few words. I'll be there too

Last night the RHSV hosted the Engineering Heritage Victoria talk on The Yallourn Briquette Works with Matthew Churchward from Museums Victoria. Matthews’s talk included some wonderful images, including “Burnie Briquette”.

This is what I mean when I say BE is doing digital settlerism. A white Westerner, college educated with honors, moving to the global south where he gets paid in dollars & exchanges for pesos to make himself wealthier than those around him in Argentina, & has the gaul to do maximalist third-worldism.

In my essay ‘Smoothing Things Over’ I wrote about the “pocket Pompeiis” of Melbourne, buried by law to fill low ground & stop disease spreading in “miry sloughs”, & unearthed later in extraordinary preservation

Anyway there’s an exhibition about this, opening on Thursday

There are significantly fewer places named after women than men.

This month, the Royal Historical Society of Victoria has collaborated with Gender Equity Victoria on the Reclaim Her Name initiative.

It might be the one thing I miss most about Canberra for this very reason. I should still get around to going up for it one year. Vic used to have the RHSV annual used book sale, but that died during the lockdown years.

There was a small squeee of delight.
The RHSV book sale has been a fav for Australian history and theory over the years. Opshopping is a joy, but I have so little time for it now. Happy when I can as my home library would be no where as extensive 🤓

Happy Easter to all who celebrate.

We hope your weekend is as scrumptious and delightful as the chocolates in this image, which were manufactured in the Chocolate Novelty Department of the MacRobertson factory in Fitzroy, sometime around 1920-1930.

The RHSV bookshop has a fab selection of books on Melbourne and Victorian history. Reader Julie Houghton recently got in touch to share how much she loved Vision Fugitive by Carole Woods, available at our bookshop - https://ow.ly/M3ly50XSikY

Did you read any great books over the summer break?
