Promises won't close Rikers Island. Action will.

We're announcing the opening of NYC’s first Outposted Therapeutic Housing Unit at Bellevue Hospital for people in custody with complex medical needs, including critically vulnerable Rikers Island detainees.

The journey to close Rikers has begun.

The beautiful game. The people’s game.

Throughout this World Cup, we have been reminded of a simple truth: football belongs to everyone. So does the joy and community it creates.

Yesterday, I joined New Yorkers on Rikers Island to watch England take on Argentina.

I'm not sure that this guy knows that Rikers is a jail and not a prison, which is part of why Rikers is so horrific. A majority of people at Rikers haven't been convicted of a crime, they are awaiting trial.
Markwayne Mullin: "Let's have Riker & Alcatraz both open. So we got east coast & west coast both covered, & put our most notorious criminals in them so people understand we're a nation of laws again, unlike under Biden... I don't believe in keeping them comfortable. I want them to regret the crime"

I guess Senator Mullin doesn't know that Rikers isn't a federal facility.

Earlier this week, I had the honor of breaking fast at Rikers Island with New Yorkers in custody. It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time.

In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to give—mercy, dignity, and humanity.

Last night, yet another person died on Rikers Island — the fifth New Yorker to lose their life in City custody within the last two weeks and the 13th this year.

These deaths are a result of Eric Adams' failure to reckon with the crisis of violence and neglect in our jails.

Grateful to Judge Rosado for overturning Mayor Adams's lawless executive order allowing ICE back on Rikers.

We should be working to close Rikers, not turning it into an ICE deportation outpost.

it felt trivial at times to be writing about video games at rikers, which is so notoriously dangerous for incarcerated people. still, play and, specifically, video games are a meaningful piece of the lives of the ~12 young men i met and played with at rikers. read:

If ICE gets even one of these facilities fully up and running, it’ll immediately be the second-largest jail in the country behind only Rikers Island.
The proposed centers are so large that some could house as many as 8,000 detainees at once, according to a DHS spreadsheet of more than 20 potential locations that was verified by NBC News. The largest federal prison in the U.S., for example, has roughly 4,000 inmates.

Sources at two government contractors told NBC News they were worried that new warehouses — and the large numbers of immigrants who would be housed in them — would present safety problems.
