Platina Resources has successfully secured the final US$2 million payment from Rio Tinto for the sale of its former Owendale scandium project in New South Wales, completing a deal that has generated a total of US$14 million for the company. The payment marks the conclusion of a transaction that began with an initial US$7 million in August 2023, followed by US$4 million in July 2024 and a US$1 million warranty retention payment in December 2025. With the full amount now received, Platina is redirecting its financial resources towards its Western Australian gold exploration projects in the Laverton district. The company's immediate focus is on three key projects: Mt McKenna, Sunrise Bore, and Mt Morgans South. These projects are situated in a mineral-rich area near established gold operations, including Genesis Minerals' Mt Morgans processing plant. At Sunrise Bore, initial drilling results have returned significant gold intercepts, including a 29-metre hit at 3.38 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, with higher-grade sections reaching up to 8.62g/t. The company plans to further test oxide material and transition to fresh rock for more comprehensive exploration. At Mt McKenna, over 10,800 metres of air-core drilling this year has outlined a one-kilometre mineralised corridor, with follow-up drilling planned. Deeper reverse circulation drilling is also scheduled at Black Rock and Granite Hill to assess whether the gold mineralisation indicates a larger system below. The Mt Morgans South prospect, spanning 126.4 square kilometres, is being evaluated for potential drill targets, with historical data review and soil sampling ongoing. Platina's strategy involves recycling capital from completed projects into new exploration opportunities, as demonstrated by the successful sale of the Owendale project. The company has also divested other projects, such as Xanadu, Challa, and Brimstone, when follow-up work did not meet expectations. With the Rio Tinto deal now complete, Platina is poised to leverage its strengthened financial position to pursue a major gold discovery in the Laverton district, which is part of a broader gold-rich region hosting significant resources. The company aims to turn its 'Rio-funded war chest' into a company-changing discovery, focusing on projects that stack up technically and commercially. This strategic shift underscores Platina's model of advancing projects before monetising them through sale, joint venture, or development, positioning the company for future growth in the gold exploration sector.
