Salmon love little shaded areas with logs and branches around them. It keeps them safe from predators. Riparian zones for life!

We found this baby Madrean Mountain Kingsnake (Lampropeltis knoblochi) several years ago out on the move in moderate rain. These colorful snakes are common in mid- to upper-elevation mountain woodlands and riparian zones.

Sometimes scientific phrases just speak to me. I'm reading a paper on raccoon densities and saw "We captured 404 unique raccoons" and now i can't stop thinking about the study to the tune of "99 red balloons"

Raccoon densities were higher in bottomland hardwoods compared to riparian forests, isolated wetlands, and upland pines. Densities in these land cover types were relatively low, likely because of min...

Novel, fascinating history of China by science writer Philip Ball, who looks at the influence of water and its fluid nature on its history and society, arguing that this influence is largely riparian rather than littoral in nature 💙📚

Should we consider behaviours a component of biodiversity?
Yes!
Understanding behavioural diversity can explain existing biodiversity patterns and improve the outcomes of conservation actions.

Very insightful paper by @micromotility.bsky.social and colleagues.

Oh, Canadian forests are very far from untouched, either. We like to promote that myth, though :(

there are some really big trees in my recent thread, but this particular riparian forest (much of it now a protected regional park) has been logged off probably more than twice in the past
so anyways, i went "fishing" yesterday - mostly just a wet walk in the woods with a flyrod. i was hoping for maybe some egg-eating trout that follow the spawning salmon. i saw a few salmon splashing but i think despite our recent rains, this particular river is still too low

Heavy rain across northern Arizona caused rivers and creeks to swell dramatically this weekend, including Oak Creek, the Verde and Salt rivers, and the San Juan River in the Four Corners region.

Spending on riverbank restoration delivers big returns
Riparian restoration can improve water quality, reduce sources of risk and pathogen load in raw drinking water, sequester carbon, and increase biodiversity. However, there is uncertainty around the return on investment in riparian restoration for decision-makers. A new study on riparian restoration in the catchments supplying water to the city of Brisbane has found the benefits can be enormous and accrue over time. Here, Joseph McMahon discusses these benefits and explains how this information is helping to justify the decisions being made by water managers to address complex water challenges. Our new research has found that fixing erosion and planting vegetation along riverbanks upstream of Brisbane (Queensland, Australia) could generate a return on investment of up to 400% (McMahon et al, 2026). Our investigation looked at the costs and benefits of riparian restoration along 95 kilometres of Lockyer Creek, a major source of sediment that impacts drinking water for Brisbane residents. We found that the restoration created benefits for the water supply utility, the South East Queensland region, and global society. Riparian restoration involves replanting native vegetation, fencing riverbanks and installing off-stream watering points for livestock (for example, see figure 1). Our study found there were multiple benefits from restoring...
